More than 2,300 people fight back against cancer at one of Bermuda’s biggest charity events this weekend.

About 120 teams are expected to take part in the anti-cancer Relay for Life and organisers hope even more people will come along to show their support.

More than 100 volunteers from PwC Bermuda will help out at the Relay for Life event this weekend.

The professional services company is supporting the event as luminaria sponsor for the fifth time.

Azuree Williams, the events and programme manager at the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, said: “The committee is tirelessly working behind the scenes and teams are pulling it all together and excited for the festivities.

“We expect things to be a lot more interesting with this year’s theme: What is Your Superpower? We think the fun meter will go to a whole new level.”

Teams of up to 12 people participate in the Relay, with one of each team always on the track. The idea behind it is that “cancer never sleeps, so for one night, we won’t either”.

The event will be held at the North Field of the National Sports Centre from 6.30pm today until 6.30pm tomorrow.

Highlights include the opening ceremony, survivors’ lap and Luminaria Ceremony, in which candles are placed in paper bags to honour survivors and remember those who lost their fight against the disease.

This year will also include a Fight Back ceremony. Entertainment will include food, prizes, DJs, dancers, singers, bands, fitness experts and “the infamous Hush Party”.

Ms Williams said that 95 per cent of funds would go to the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre Equal Access Fund.

The fund was set up to help people without health insurance or whose insurance does not provide full coverage to be treated without financial hardship.

The remaining 5 per cent will go to Global Relay For Life’s cancer control initiatives worldwide. There will be art and crafts and other decorations available at the event for attendees to personalise their bags and make children’s superhero masks.

As night falls, the PwC team will lay hundreds of the luminaria, small paper lanterns with tea-lights inside, around the track for the Luminaria Ceremony, when participants will walk laps in silence to pay tribute to and remember loved ones.

“Relay for Life is an inspirational event, bringing together all those in our community who have battled through the effects of cancer.

“It allows all participants to remember the struggles they or loved ones have endured and honour all those fighting cancer.”

Close to $340,000 was raised to help support uninsured and underinsured cancer patients at the Relay for Life last year.

People can make a $10 donation at the gate on Frog Lane or Roberts Avenue that will grant 24-hour access to the event.
