A Bermudian student is to start her final year at an overseas boarding school as head girl.Adriana Malpas, 17, said that she would oversee events put on by prefects as part of her new role at the Trinity College School in Ontario, Canada.She added that she hoped to give other pupils a sense of normality as they return to school for the first time since they left earlier this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.Adriana said: “We’re definitely trying to make it as normal as possible for the new students and the returning ones, just because I know a lot of students are nervous about what it might be like to come back.“’We have heard of a lot of restrictions on things that maybe won’t happen this year, such as sports teams.“I think a lot of students are definitely down at the moment because of these things, so we’re trying to make our events better than ever so we can get their spirits back up.”Adriana, who has been at the school for three years, said that she was voted into the position by other pupils and teachers.She added that she did not know she had been considered for the position until she was in a Zoom videoconference with her school headteacher in mid-May.Adriana, from St David’s, said: “We were on a Zoom call with the whole school and they announced the head boy, head girl and other prefects.“I was beaming — it was definitely a very proud moment for me.”She added: “I sort of hoped to be a prefect and I know I’m obviously pretty involved in the community.“A bunch of my friends were saying ‘I would vote for you for prefect’, but getting head girl was just amazing.”Adriana explained that pupils had to have a clean disciplinary record, strong involvement in school life and a history of representation of the school to be considered for head girl or boy. She added that she and the head boy were expected to be role models for other pupils and ambassadors for the school.Adriana said that she was confident she could represent the school because she had already done so through sport.She added that she was delighted she would represent the school and become a role model.Adriana said: “It’s basically become my home — everyone there feels like my family.”She is to fly back on Thursday to quarantine in Montreal before she returns to school. Adriana said that she will go on a retreat over the Labour Day weekend with the head boy and prefects to organise the first few events of the school year.
