BFA to probe Rec. bottle-throwing

to form a special commission to review Sunday's bottle-throwing at Devonshire Rec. which forced referee Rex Osborne to abandon the First Division game between Devonshire Cougars and Devonshire Colts.

General Secretary David Sabir said last night the association hoped the commission could come up with a set of recommendations that could be used to assist clubs and the BFA to prevent similar incidents occurring in the sport.

Referee Osborne was forced to end the game after 82 minutes when a large number of bottles were thrown onto the field by Cougars fans after an `equalising goal' by their team was disallowed. Colts were leading 1-0 at the time.

Onlookers described the incident as one of the nastiest seen in local soccer for some time, claiming that it only fell just short of becoming a riot with game officials narrowly escaping injury.

Because of the seriousness of the incident, the BFA announced yesterday that Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final between Devonshire Cougars and Dandy Town, originally scheduled for Devonshire Rec., has been switched to Wellington Oval at 2.30 p.m.

Sabir also revealed that the league's committee would review the matter of the points from Sunday's game before deciding if a replay would be necessary or whether the points would be awarded to Colts.

"The BFA applauds the efforts of the game and club officials on hand at Devonshire Rec. and make it clear that incidents of that nature will not support the best interests of the sport,'' added Sabir.
