Both league leaders suffered defeat as play in the women's hockey league resumed last weekend.

In the A Division, Cardinals were edged 1-0 by a stubborn Police Orioles side who entered the game winless this season.

Cardinals started confidently but failed to get into their normal passing game.

Spearheaded by Nikita Evans, Orioles grew in confidence and after 15 minutes of the second half they scored the deciding goal through Zina Jones on a breakaway.

Cardinals fought back and during the last 15 minutes came close to equalising when Maria Pitchery just failed to convert a free hit from outside the circle.

On Sunday, Canaries had a chance to take over the A Division lead but were foiled by a fighting Longtails team.

Canaries led 2-0 on goals by Rhonda Rawlins and Sarah Northcott, but with 15 minutes left Stacey DeShields and Lisa Rawlins scored evened it up for Longtails.

Canaries regained the lead when Emma Garron converted a cross from the right.

But Longtails replied within a minute when Joanne Wilson walked through the defence to level the score at 3-3.

The draw left Canaries level on points with Cardinals and Longtails just one point behind.

Runaway B league leaders Canaries were upset 1-0 by the youthful Swifts who were led by Caroline Black, Leigh-Anne Shaw and Suella Matthews. Anna Anthon netted the lone goal.
