Carlos toast of the Town

Dandy Town's dynamic destroyer Carlos Smith put an out-of-sorts Boulevard through sheer hell yesterday.

First, the striker outstripped Boulevard's defence in the 14th minute to slot the ball past an injured Mitchell Steede.

And then he created the Hornets' winner in the 53rd minute when again his blistering turn of pace left the home side's defence for dead.

Smith's shot from outside the six-yard area rebounded off an advancing Lynn Tucker -- Steede's second half replacement -- and fell into the path of a grateful Darron Simons.

Simons, who formed a powerful combination up front with Smith, thumped the ball home from 10 yards.

Town's top scorer is unlikely to have had an easier goal this season.

Earlier, Boulevard's frontman Michael Holdipp had kept his side in the game with a cracking 33rd minute strike. But this was always going to be Town's afternoon at St. David's.

A First Division clash between two sides placed second and third in the table always looks promising in theory, but Boulevard seemed lacking in confidence yesterday -- perhaps unsurprising, since injuries have played some havoc with their selection.

The only Boulevard player to match the ball control, shooting power, blistering pace, and commitment of Carlos Smith was Dwight Warren.

But Warren found himself up against a well organised Dandy Town defence, which quickly shut out Boulevard's attacks.

Town were always the more penetrating up front, with their midfielders providing useful service for the front players.

It was Pernell Douglas whose exquisite pass from just inside Boulevard's half set up Smith for the opening goal.

Warren nearly tied things up in the 30th minute when he let fly with a typical long-range shot. The ball went beyond Cymande Davis' reach and clipped the crossbar.

It was Warren again who minutes later gave Boulevard another great scoring opportunity when he darted down the left wing, whipped the ball to Stevie Wade, who in turn knocked it to an unmarked Dean Boyles, lurking just nine yards from Town's goal.

But he made a hash of things when the ball appeared to get stuck under his boot.

Nevertheless, Holdipp gave his side a lifeline moments later with his superbly taken 15-yard strike from the left flank.

The first half ended with a worrying injury to Town's defender Wayne Campbell and some controversy when referee Peter Sousa was forced to stop the match for four minutes when a spectator came on to the pitch.

Campbell was later taken to hospital as a precaution after two head clashes left him slightly concussed.

At the restart, Campbell was replaced with Chris Anderson, while Tucker came on for Boulevard's 'keeper Steede, who had a hand injury.

Tucker was soon in the thick of things when Smith went on one of his mesmerising dribbles through Boulevard's defence.

His shot, however, was easily smothered by an advancing Tucker.
