Chalk up one more for Way
he cruised to the men's open title in the annual Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitational tournament with a comfortable 6-3, 7-5 victory over second seed Mike Curry.
Way's sister Kelly Holland won the women's crown when she beat Kim Simmons 6-4, 6-4 Stuart Smith Angela Stephens defeated American brother and sister team of Ted and Phyllis Hoehn 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to capture the century mixed doubles title.
Smith and Stephens, who hail from Anaheim, California, roared off to a 4-0 lead in the first set before the Americans ran off six straight games to take the first set 6-4.
When the Hoehns jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set things looked awfully grim for the former Bermuda champion and his visiting team-mate. But as in the first set with the Hoehns, Smith and Stephens reached deep and came up with seven of the next eight games to take the second set 7-5.
Smith and Stephens went on to win the third set.
The victory was all the more sweet for Smith because he had topped Hoen, currently ranked number one in the World in the men's 55s.
In the open men's doubles, top seeds Mike Curry and James Collieson came from a set down and on the brink of defeat to take the title with a heart stopping 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Graham and Courtland Boyle in a battle that lasted almost three hours.
The Boyles methodically moved towards what would have been a stunning upset when they led in the second set. But the crowd favourites set their game into a higher gear and levelled the match by taking the second and third sets.
The women's open doubles competition dished up another heart-stopping final when Barbara Lambert and Kelly Holland came from 3-0 and 4-1 down in the third set to defeat the favoured pair of Gill Butterfield and Debbie Harper 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. In the day's other title match Yvonne Von Nostrand defeated Rosemarie Asch 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 to take the women's 40's crown.
But it is one down and one to go as the Coral Beach Club Invitational is underway and two of today's top matches feature top seed Greg Frigerio against Mike Gorton and Mark Cordeiro facing former resident and local champion Norberto Herrero.
