Champs crushed in junior final

Flatts 68 Just two weeks after their stunning 54-run victory over powerhouses Bailey's Bay, champions Flatts crashed to a 67-run defeat against St. David's in the Junior Eastern Counties Cup final at Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday.

Spearheading the East Enders to victory was all-rounder Shannon Raynor who led his team's scoring with a brisk knock of 27 and then followed up by dismissing Flatts' last two batsmen to finish with bowling figures of two for nought off just 1.5 overs, including a maiden. His sterling performance earned him Most Valuable Player Award.

Flatts' Dale Benjamin, who shared the new ball with Markel DeShields, was the game's top bowler with figures of five for 27 off 12.1 overs, including three maidens. But despite his medium pace efforts, St. David's managed to reach a respectable total of 135.

Skipper Chris Foggo helped stabilise St. David's' innings after they had struggled during the early going, losing two wickets for only 12 runs.

Foggo, who scored 20, defied the attack until the total reached 59 when he was the fourth player out.

But with Raynor in good form and O.J.Pitcher stroking 18 and Jonathon Santucci 13, St. David's breezed towards the century mark. This target was ensured when number 10 batsman Dejaun Paynter hammered a well earned 15.

In addition to Benjamin, Flatts got bowling support from DeShields who took two for 21 and Don Vickers who had two for 35.

Flatts crumbled early as they set about the run chase, losing six wickets for just 16 runs.

But relief came during a seventh-wicket stand between opener Jekone Edness and Kijuan Franks who put on 44, Edness playing the role of anchor and scoring 11 while Franks contributed a stylish 32.

However, after both were dismissed within a span of eight runs it wasn't long before the inevitable arrived with Raynor polishing off the last two wickets in grand style.

Dejaun Paynter was top bowler for St. David's with four for 32 off nine overs with two maidens while Javon Foggo had two for 12 off nine overs and four maidens.
