Clay knocks breeze out of Bailey
Clay Smith struck a classy 94 not out to lead St. George's to a seven-wicket win over Bailey's Bay at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday.
St. George's retained the Cal Wade Memorial trophy with the win as the match also served as a trial in the run-in to Cup Match on July 29-30 at Wellington Oval.
Bay rested several of their top players as they are due to meet St. George's in a top-of-the-table league match next week.
But there was no doubting the quality of the victory as St. George's, who rested spinner David Adams, persevered after a long afternoon in the sun.
Kenny Phillips produced a four-for-10 burst in four overs after lunch to reduce Bay to 140 for seven.
Phillips accounted for Clevie Wade (eight) and Corey Hill on successive balls and then bowled Charlie Marshall (50) and Irving Romaine (two).
Marshall, Bay captain for the day, was the cornerstone of the home side's innings, batting for just under three hours. He hit four fours.
Cal Dill scored 24 not out to help push Bay to a more challenging total.
Earlier, opening bat Roger Trott scored 22 and Glenn Smith smashed four sixes and three fours in a quick 42.
Phillips, who captured the wicket of Dennis Trott (two) early, finished with five for 39 from 13 overs. Clay Smith claimed two for 68 from 16.3 overs and Eugene Foggo toiled in a 20-over spell that yielded one for 31.
Clay Smith hit two sixes and 14 fours after coming in at number three with the score only 10.
The right-hander gave one chance to Corey Hill off young spinner Damon Edwards at deep extra cover soon after passing 50 but was untroubled from there.
Edwards did get some reward from his off-breaks as he claimed Dexter Smith (21) and Graham Fox (16) leg before.
After Anthony Trott retired hurt on 11 with a hamstring pull, Ricky Hodsoll (12 not out) saw the innings through with Smith.
Young Edwards finished with two for 43 from 10 overs.
Basden's XI 146 Maybury's XI 147-4 Ferdinand Thorne and Anthony Manders were the stars of what proved to be a low key Cup Match trial for Somerset on Saturday.
Dexter Basden's team had 10 players and Perry Maybury's had nine, which included two youngsters who were no older than 10.
Thorne scored 55 at opening bat and Manders made known his plans to make the team as a specialist wicket-keeper with an unbeaten 37 to go with two catches and a stumping.
Thorne hit nine fours and a six before he was bowled round his legs attempting to hit leg-spinner James Swan to long leg.
Andre Manders and Omar Amory both went lbw for 10 before Anthony Manders gave a chanceless performance, which included four fours and a five.
Perry Maybury was not out on 13.
Dexter Basden led his side's batting with an aggressive 39. They were at one stage 62 for one before Jeff Richardson (25) fell to a fine one-hand diving catch by Charles Swan in the covers off Allan Brangman.
Richardson hit four fours and a six, then his skipper quickly followed, stumped by Manders off Willow Cuts team-mate Kevin Fubler's bowling. Basden hit six fours and a six.
Rodney Fubler ran out of partners on 35, having hit six fours.
Kevin Fubler took three for 25 from eight overs, Andre Manders two for 22 from four and Brangman two for 46 from 10.
