Evans and Way set for Saturday showdown
semi-finals of the Coral Beach Invitational and like a beacon signalling safe passage, each displayed their brightest and best for an appreciative gallery.
Top seed Donald Evans and number two Mike Way set the stage for their long awaited rematch tomorrow when they each had convincing wins.
Meanwhile, women's second seed Kim Simmons will face the top seeded Jans Rolls of Great Britain in the women's final.
Evans, taking only 21 minutes to breeze through the first set 6-2 against American challenger Jim Baumer, was forced to close the throttle in the second set, but still prevailed 6-4. The match lasted an hour and 10 minutes.
Equally enthralling was the other semi-final between the two Michaels; Way and Curry, with the former winning 6-2, 6-2.
"My plan was to move him around a little bit, because he's not moving too well at the moment,'' said Way afterwards. "It's always a possibility he can get hot once in a while, but I felt pretty confident about the victory.'' On the women's side Kim Simmons, throwing caution to the wind, attacked from the start and overwhelmed Kathy Stauhler 6-2, 6-4.
The day's lone final saw the combination of Gill Butterfield and Alice Duff seize the women's over 40 doubles title with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Mary Lenore Blair and Gretchen Devlin.
