Evans demolishes Frigerio

years, literally destroyed third seed Greg Frigerio during the semi-finals of the Coral Beach and Tennis Club Invitational yesterday.

Evans allowed one of the pre-tournament favourites just one game on his way to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Fresh from a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of American Michael Gorton Jr. on Wednesday, Evans never allowed Frigerio into the match. In fact he started by breaking Frigerio after deuce, then held for a 2-0 lead.

But just when it appeared as if Evans was going to blow his opponent away, Frigerio dug deep and held serve in the third game.

Little did he know, or even realise, that was to be his only brush with success during the match which lasted less than an hour.

"There are no excuses,'' Frigerio offered after the match. "I was physically fine, my equipment was fine, he just blew me off the court.'' Frigerio said that Evans, in devastating form, "took everything I had early and responded to it. He just never let me into the game.'' When it was all over Frigerio said he talked with Evans and Evans remembered back during the spring when the two last met and Frigerio took him to a third set tie-break.

"He thus came out all pumped up,'' admitted Frigerio. "I wasn't in that same frame of mind and paid the penalty.

"You see, I wanted to ease into the match, but he was too sharp. He returned my best serve and literally took me out of the match by returning my best shots.

"Ater the fourth game I started to think that I had to break him soon in order to maintain some confidence but that wasn't to be.'' The victory moved Evans into the final on Saturday where he will face the winner between top seed Michael Way and fourth seed Dean Mello. This contest will be played today.

Way, who beat Evans the last time they played, defeated Wilfred Gonsalves 6-2, 6-2 to set up the meeting with Mello. Way will have some unfinished business to take care of this afternoon as well because he and Mike Curry were in trouble against Graham Boyle and Mark Cordeiro before darkness fell, having lost the opening set of their semi-final doubles match, 6-4.

Even though the weather took a toll on the day's play, there was one other notable match where Michael Curry teamed with Gill Butterfield to defeat Donna Bradshaw and Eldon Daniels in a three-set thriller.

Bradshaw, who came out of retirement to take part in the tournament and not seeded, was a pre-tournament favourite to take the mixed doubles title.
