Flatts determined to end St. David's six-year reign

Flatts will be taking four guest players and a rejuvenated Maxwell Lawrence to Lord's tomorrow in an attempt to rid bickering St. David's of the Eastern Counties Cup.

Discarded national team bowlers Anthony Edwards of Devonshire Rec. and Gary Brangman of league champions Western Stars, and left-arm leg-spinners Dwayne Leverock of Police and Vivian Simons of Willow Cuts will be charged with the task of bowling the cup-holders out on what is expected to be a firm pitch.

That, plus the return of medium-pacer Lawrence after three years out of the game, has Flatts excited about the possibility of ending St. David's six-year reign.

Lawrence explained yesterday he needed a break from the game because personal matters took precedence.

But upon his return, the 30-year-old quickly regained the form that made him one of the more promising stock bowlers in the island.

The problem in the Eastern Counties, however, is that Flatts have never held the cup in his career and opposing batsmen have not had to score quickly against him.

"I haven't done too well in the Eastern Counties,'' said the 1981 youth international. "We have a lot of bowling in our team and that should help. I feel pretty good about our chances. We have a lot of young guys in the team and it should be a good game.'' Last year, Flatts batted first, scored 195 for seven declared and lost by eight wickets.

The consensus is that St. David's have become victims of their own county success and it is time for them to fall -- regardless who the winning team are.

Vivian Simons, one of two colts Flatts have chosen, readily buys into that theory.

"People have stopped me on the street and said that it is time for them to lose. I wouldn't mind that,'' said Simons whose grandfather was brought up in Bailey's Bay and who always wanted to play in the Eastern Counties for Flatts after admiring past stars like Dennis Wainwright, McDonald Woolridge and Alfred (Fleas) Hall.

"I always liked playing against them,'' said Simons.

Leverock will share the spin duties with Simons while Brangman and Troy Bean can be expected to spell Edwards.

Club spinner Gerald Sims is ineligible because previously played in the competition for Cleveland.

Batting depth against St. David's is inconsequential if you do not have the cup, but the challengers will be led in that department by the skipper, who rebounded from a slow start with an unbeaten century against Police recently.

Derek Wright has two half-centuries under his belt while Aaron Woolridge has also done well with the bat on occasion.

Flatts' team for tomorrow: Rodney Woolridge (captain), Floyd Smith, Troy Dean, Derek Wright, Troy Bean, Maxwell Lawrence, Aaron Woolridge, Dwayne Leverock, Gary Brangman, Vivian Simons (colt), Anthony Edwards (colt). Reserve: Braxton Stowe.
