Flying start propels Town into final four: SOCCER Friendship Trophy

Dandy Town surged into the semi-finals of the Friendship Trophy, upending First Division leaders Devonshire Colts in a scrappy affair at Somerset Cricket Club last night.

A first half strike from Seyoum Tuzo together with one from Darron Simons and a brilliant effort from Reggie Tucker earned Town a spot alongside Vasco, North Village and St. David's, while banishing Colts to the sidelines.

Town got off to a dream start as neat work along the left flank between Tuzo and Carlos Smith saw the latter send in an inch perfect cross that Tuzo connected on near the edge of the penalty area. While goalkeeper Troy Hall got a hand to the ball he couldn't prevent it crossing the line.

Colts stormed back moments later and came close to scoring as Keenan Burchall and Shannon Burgess were denied by some fine keeping by Cymande Davis.

But Davis, after denying a Burgess header in the 37th minute, could do little to prevent Keishon Smith from scoring a minute later as the midfielder volleyed home a rebound from a corner kick.

However, the second half belonged to the St.John's Road club and it was the hardworking Tucker who provided the spark.

Against the run of play, Tucker launched the equivalent of a guided missile, latching onto a partial clearance 20 yards out and giving Hall no chance as the ball rocketed into the net.

As Colts went in search of another equaliser, Simons closed matters with a disputed goal in the 87th minute, getting the benefit of a no call for offside and forcing the ball past Hall.

Prospect 2 Social Club 1 Prospect earned an unlikely berth in the semi-finals of the Shield competition after extinguishing favoured Social Club in a lively opening encounter.

And just as in their previous round match against now former defending champions Paget, the men in blue worked overtime for victory.

In the end it took a 108th minute goal from substitute Lawrence Holder to decide the issue in Prospect's favour, Holder eluding the Bluebirds' offside trap and showing great composure as he rounded the goalkeeper before sidefooting into an empty goal.

Surprisingly Prospect, anchored at the bottom of the Second Division standings, dominated much of the opening period, as Dwayne Leverock gave them a sixth minute lead.

However, the tide turned following the break with Social Club finding their footing and laying siege upon Prospect, who owed a great debt to 'keeper Colin Paynter.

Time and again Paynter proved the difference in keeping the opposition at bay, his only blemish coming in the 56th minute when Winston Thomas beat him for the equaliser.

Prospect join Somerset, Hotels and Wolves in the final four of the competition.
