Gibbons man of the match

was named man-of-the-match for the Essex League Select in their 88-run victory over the Middlesex League in a three-day fixture that ended yesterday. Scores: Essex 243, 278-3; Middlesex 194, 239.

The match featured all of the professionals playing in the two leagues in England.

Batting at number five, Gibbons finished with 101 in his team's second innings, putting on 216 for the fourth wicket with Brian Uxbridge of New Zealand who was unbeaten on 130. Gibbons struck six fours and a six while batting for 131 minutes.

He was actually clean bowled on the second ball he faced but it was called a no-ball. And then he was dropped in the slips while on nine.

"But I was pleased with my batting. After the early shakiness I settled down and batted quite well,'' said Gibbons last night.

In the first innings, Gibbons scored 63 not out and then took four for 46 off nine overs, including a maiden. Former West Indies Test bowler Patrick Patterson had two wickets along with another West Indian Franklyn Rose.

During Middlesex's second innings, Gibbons collected five for 68 from 14 overs with two maidens.
