So to score the only goal of the match in the dying minutes on Tuesday night after coming on as a substitute certainly helped endear him to the City fans.

There were about 5,000 fans at the game which was played for the Gloucester Cup. It was also the first game for Goater since suffering a knee injury which had prevented him from training and looked like threatening his league debut for the club next weekend.

He came on as a substitute 25 minutes into the second half and scored the winning goal about ten minutes from the end, a left-foot chip over the goalkeeper from outside the six yard box.

"A few of the players were saying that they (City fans) will love me now for the next six months,'' Goater joked.

Goater is settling in nicely with the Second Division club since his 175,000 move from Rotherham United but his injury has slowed his progress. He picked up the injury while on a long distance run in training and had to miss important training sessions.

The Bermudian striker was impressive in his first outing for the club recently when he scored the opening goal in the team's friendly match against non-league team Tiverton, which City won 4-1.

"They are a great bunch of lads, and that has made it very easy to settle in,'' said Goater of his new team-mates. "The city of Bristol is very lovely, it reminds me of home.

Bristol City open their season on August 17 away to Gillingham and Goater is hoping there are no more problems with the injury.

"For me I've never missed more than two days training apart from when I had my cartilege operation, so I started to get worried after day two,'' he said.

"It's a bit depressing because you do two weeks of hard training and then you are back at stage one.'' Already in his short time at the new club Goater has been impressed with manager Joe Jordan.

"He is very professional, we have a pre-match meal before friendlies and then go on walks before games so he prepares us the same way he would for a league or cup game. In my time at Rotherham we just used to show up to the game and play.'' City are in the process of signing a couple of players before the start of the season. The club also installed some more seating.

"When you look at the ground you think it should at least be a First Division club and it has the potential to be in the Premier League,'' he said.

Goater accepts the club and the fans will be very demanding of him as the club tries to gain promotion to the First Division.

"You want to go out there and put on the best you can because your first impression is what they are going to judge you by.''
