Hunt blunder hands Hotels victory

PHC full back Enwar Hunt extended the hand of friendship a bit too far in last night's first round Cup tie of that name at BAA Field when he used it to stop a goal-bound shot from Hotels' Clifford Roberts on the line seconds before half-time.

Dennis Robinson coolly slotted home the resulting penalty, while referee Leroy Wilson had no option but to order Hunt off for his untimely intervention.

Three minutes into the second half Robinson, exploiting the gap left by the errant Hunt on the PHC right, picked up a hopeful high ball forward, had time to turn inside on to his right foot and deliver a pinpoint cross which Michael Holdipp had only to get his head to to direct past Elsworth Bean for the second.

It was little more than Hotels deserved after they had had the better of the early exchanges in a game where the plentiful skill of the approach work was not matched by coolness and precision in the final third of the field.

Robinson, the night's outstanding performer, had forged the opening opportunity as early as the third minute, using his pace to get down the left and seeing his dangerous low cross directed into the grateful arms of Bean by one of his own defenders.

The Hotels number 10 was then clearly held back as he threatened to get free after a nice interchange of passes between Holdipp and Quinton Francis but the referee missed the infringement. Moments later Joseph Weekes clipped the top of the crossbar with a volley from 10 yards out when Holdipp flicked a free kick into his path.

PHC gradually came more into the game and after 24 minutes the pacy McLee Smith, with his back to goal, set up Kenny Mills but Dupres turned his low effort around the post. Eight minutes later Dupres dived bravely at Smith's feet when he was put through by Chris Furbert.

But they saved their best moments for the second half as Hotels took their collective feet off the gas, forcing a series of corners, from one of which Albert Thomas headed straight at Dupres when well-placed. And captain Richard Mallory was thwarted when the Hotels keeper parried his shot after tricky work by McLee Smith.

Boulevard 3 Devonshire Colts 2 Boulevard scored a narrow win over Devonshire Colts in this Premier Junior Division match at BAA Field last night, thanks to strikes by Dexter Samuels, Shaki Crockwell and an own goal.

Continuing problems with floodlights have forced Bermuda Football Association to switch the venue for both double-headers tonight and tomorrow night.

This evening's First Division game between Devonshire Cougars and Somerset (9.00 p.m.) and Second Division match between Wolves and Hamilton Parish (7.00 p.m.), originally scheduled for Devonshire Rec. will now be played at Somerset.

Also moved out to the West End tomorrow night are the First Division game between Boulevard and Vasco (9.00 p.m.) and Premier Division junior match between Wolves and Boulevard (7.00 p.m.) which had been slated for PHC Stadium.

In tonight's First Division clash, both teams will be aiming to improve on their first outings that saw the newly-promoted Trojans squeeze out a 1-0 victory over Hotels, and Devonshire Cougars decisively beaten 4-2 by PHC -- a game that they could have won with sharper shooting in the first half.

The Trojans' bench will be minus the presence of their influential coach Randy Horton who is in Jamaica as tour manager for the national cricket squad. And it remains to be seen if his absence will have any affect on the team's performance.
