Islanders pay for missed chances

For the third straight league match, St. David's failed to find the net and it was the difference between losing and at least drawing as Stevie Wade's first half strike decided this First Division clash at St. David's yesterday.

In the dying minutes St. David's hit the post and then had a free kick blocked on the line with the last shot of the game. The result dropped the Islanders back to the bottom of the standings with just a point from five matches.

Just two minutes into the game a heavy shower began and except for a couple of brief breaks the match was played in rain, the slick conditions making it difficult for the game to flow.

In the second half there was fear among spectators that the game had been called off when referee Gary Cook, concerned about the safety of the players, took both teams off the field for six minutes because of thunder and lightning.

St. David's had their share of the first half pressure without making Boulevard pay. And their hopes lifted late in the game with the introduction of substitutes Lionel Cann and Sergio Goater.

The game's only goal came in the 34th minute when Dwight Warren knocked the ball down the left flank for Stevie Wade. He cut inside and had a shot blocked by the advancing Kuhn Evans before the ball went back to Wade who calmly steered it into an empty net.

Minors shot wide for St. David's early in the second half after Patrick White found him with a pass on the left side.

Then player-coach Andrew Bascome was almost made to pay for a casual free kick outside the Boulevard penalty area as Boulevard gained possession and raced upfield where Wade's shot was tipped around the post by Evans.

Captain Neil Robinson broke through a hapless St. David's defence before shooting against the near post. Rodney Bascome shot high and wide with two efforts in the space of a minute, just before the teams were led off the field in the 61st minute.

Upon their return St. David's looked a revived bunch as Cann, who joined their attack in the 55th minute, began to create chances.

St. David's came close to scoring in the 78th minute when Cann put a first time volley over the bar from close range after Hendrickson's punched clearance to a Keith Jennings corner landed perfectly for the striker inside the box.

St. David's began to stake a late claim for a point as Cann was fouled outside the area by Mitchell Trott and with the free kick from 25 yards, Jennings' effort took a deflection before hitting the far post with Hendrickson helpless.

Substitutes Sergio Goater and Cann combined with the latter's volley just missing the far post.

Hendrickson almost paid for time wasting right on full time when Cook blew him down and placed the ball right on the six-yard line. Boulevard lined their goalline with 10 players and the free kick was smashed against the wall as Cook's final whistle was blown to signal three important points in the bag for the Blazers.
