Islanders silence the critics with second successive win

St.David's 2 Southampton Rangers 0 Those who might have pencilled in St. David's as one of the two teams bound for relegation from the First Division this season would be wise to change their thinking.

For the second week in a row the East Enders scored a surprise victory over fancied opponents, following up a 2-1 win last week at Dandy Town with this 2-0 beating of Southampton Rangers who entered the game in second place -- and finished in fifth.

The result had St. David's fans singing triumphantly with shouts of "Mighty St. David's'' and "We are the giant killers'' echoing around the ground.

And such celebrations were well earned although the cheering came in sharp contrast to the frustration both players and fans have suffered for much of the first half of the season.

A goal after 32 minutes by Otis Minors gave the Islanders a deserved 1-0 lead and then player-coach Andrew Bascome, who came on as a substitute for the injured Minors after 87 minutes, put the result out of reach with the second goal on the stroke of time.

Rangers were clearly rattled by the home side's early fight and determination, not to mention talent. St.David's impressed with their ability to counter attack, often inspired in midfield by the hard working Del Minors.

Unsettled by the early drive shown by St. David's, Southampton were forced to defend for much of the first half, although Ascento Russell came close to putting them ahead with a cracking 22-yard shot which rebounded off the crossbar after just seven minutes.

St.David's gave their opponents an early scare also when Keith Jennings chested a Minors' cross against the post after 10 minutes.

St. David's reached the interval holding a 1-0 edge on Minors' goal after 32 minutes when he swept the ball home after a fine build-up down the right flank.

Rangers raised their rhythm and pace in the second half and pinned down St.

David's for long spells, but they still proved inept up front as skipper Olin Jones fed his forwards with defence-splitting passes time and time again only to see the ball eventually cleared.

Jerry Webb saw two headers narrowly go over the bar in Rangers' best finishing moves, but otherwise the St. David's defence stood firm.

Near the end Southampton centre-back Shawn Simmons miskicked a clearance from goalkeeper Kuhn Evans and the grateful Bascome was in position to slip through the middle and beat the advancing Randy Darrell in goal with a sizzling shot.
