Jones burned by bunkers

of the Senior British Open when he could only manage an 11-over-par 82 at the mine-filled 6,673 yard Royal Lytham St. Anne's course.

The sixth, seventh and 18th holes proved particularly burdensome to the local professional as he was swallowed up by the huge bunkers and squandered seven strokes.

"Those three holes really did me in,'' said Jones as he pondered his chances of making the cut. "Otherwise I feel I played really good.

"I hit the ball well and I'm putting really good right now.

"If I can go out and shoot a respectable round (today) I'll be satisfied.'' Jones stood at seven over after the front nine, which included a birdie at number five and a pars on four, eight and nine, but was impaired by bogeys at one, two and three, a triple-bogey at the sixth and a double-bogey on the seventh hole.

He showed signs of coming back during the back nine while parring 10, 12, 13 and 14 and registering a birdie at the par-five 11. However, bogeys at 16 and the historic 17th hole combined with another double bogey at 18 made the prospects of qualifying for the final two rounds daunting indeed.

"I'll have to really shoot down near par or better to make it.''
