Juniors set for Atlantic golf tourney
International Championships which get underway next Tuesday. The event has attracted youngsters from the United States, Canada, England and the Caribbean, as well as Bermuda's top young players, and this year will see some 75 juniors start the 72-hole event.
But overseas numbers are down from 31 in 1994 to a disappointing 23. Play begins at Belmont and moves on to Mid Ocean and Port Royal before returning to Belmont for the final round next Friday.
Champions last year were James Baker of Florida and local Alisa Hardy. But Baker will not be back this year while Hardy is over age.
A serious contender in the 18-21 age group should be Bermuda's 1993 overall boys champion Chris Garland, who missed last year's tournament after suffering a knee injury that required surgery.
The 15-17 age group features local players David James Jr, Michael Sims and Robbie Spurling in what should be a hotly-contested battle.
They will be challenged by three US players from Columbus University where Garland currently studies. Chad Glanton, a one handicapper, plus Ken Pullin and David Folds, both three handicappers, should prove tough opposition for the locals.
Additionally, Kieran Doherty of Conneticut and Andy Little of Georgia are expected to be in contention.
The boys 13-14 age group is led by American William Weil and Bahamian Keno Turnquest who will face competition from local player B.J. Payne.
Ten-year-old Aaron James should be the one to beat in the 12 and under category.
The girls group is smaller than usual with visiting eight handicapper Kristen Pepe the favourite. Leading the locals should be Jennifer Spurling, Lindsey Sims and Sarah Lindo.
