Juniors threaten tourney records
International Junior Golf Championships conclude at Belmont today.
Michael Sims of Bermuda and Jameica Duncombe of Bahamas continued their torrid play yesterday in the third round at Port Royal and are on target to eclipse the 18-year-old records for lowest four-day totals in the 22nd annual tournament.
Sims, the 19-year-old newly crowned Bermuda Amateur Strokeplay champion, fired a one-over 70 yesterday to increase his lead over Robert Spurling to ten strokes. With a two-under total of 210 for 54 holes, he needs only to shoot 75 at Belmont today to better Dan Derisio's record of 286, set in 1980.
The defending champion shot a 68 at Belmont in the opening round this week.
Duncombe, who wrapped up the girls title with a 76 yesterday, has a three-round total of 227 and can break Michelle Bell's girls record of 301 with a 74. The 15-year-old leads second-place Sarah Thompson by an insurmountable 26 strokes.
The remaining boys divisions will be more hotly contested.
Ryan Mello of Bermuda and Keno Turnquest of Bahamas are tied at 233, just two shots ahead of Chris Brough in the boys 15-17 age group. Aaron James holds a one-shot advantage over Fraser Hunt in the boys 13-14 division.
