Lago Mar take slender lead into final day
the third round of the Goodwill Golf Tournament, and will take a one stroke lead into today's final round.
A net 59 at Mid Ocean added to previous scores of 62 and 58 gave the Florida club a total of 179 and a slender advantage over Long Cove Club from South Carolina and local club Riddell's Bay, both currently on 180.
The pressure of being at the top didn't appear to affect either Lago Mar or Riddell's Bay as they tied for the day's best score at the par 71 Mid Ocean.
At the same time Long Cove were weighing in with a net 60 at nearby Castle Harbour to set up an intriguing final day's play.
Both Lago Mar and Riddell's Bay will play Castle Harbour today while Long Cove have a more difficult task when they travel to the west end to play Port Royal.
Lago Mar are led by club professional John Francis, and include amateurs Fred Kegelmeyer, Bill Losson and Mike Fornataro. Riddell's Bay, meanwhile, rely on the talents of pro Darron Swan along with Norman Wilson, Tom Wilding and Michael Moniz.
Aside from the mentioned clubs, there remain several still in with a shot of the title.
Of those, Waynesborough and The Country Club stand the best chance as they both play at Belmont, the easiest of the four courses. Waynesborough are three strokes behind the leaders on 182, while The Country Club stand a stroke further back.
St. Louis, currently fourth on 181, also remain in the hunt, and like Riddell's Bay and Lago Mar have Castle Harbour as their final challenge.
Meanwhile, Candiac Golf Club, after a pair of mediocre rounds suddenly discovered the magic at Belmont, as they produced the day's best overall score of 57.
Others with solid performances were Greenwich Country Club, with a 58 at Castle Harbour and Holly Hill National Country Club, who carded a 61 at Port Royal.
In the gross division Waynesborough lead with 198 followed closely by Ocean View (199) and Toronto Golf Club and Winchester Country Club, both on 200.
