Mallory prevails in thriller final
men's open final in the 68th Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitational at Coral Beach on Saturday.
Opponent Greg Frigerio took the opening set 6-2, Mallory bounced back to win the second 6-1 and in a nailbiting decider Mallory prevailed 8-6.
In a contest of fluctuating fortunes between the top two seeds, Mallory was forced to pull out all the stops after Frigerio had allowed him just 10 points in the last five game of the first set.
Mallory broke twice early in the second set to race into a 4-0 lead and eventually took the set in just 17 minutes.
But the pattern of the match changed again in the seventh game of the final set when Frigerio broke the top seed and then held his own serve to level the score at 4-4.
He then broke again to lead 5-4 and had two match points. But he netted the first and was then unable to reach Mallory's deft drop shot.
That was the signal for another Mallory revival as he took six of the next eight points to go 6-5 up, although Frigerio levelled again at 6-6.
After holding at 15 to go 7-6 ahead, Mallory won the first three points of the 14th game to earn three match points. Frigerio saved the first before failing to get to another fine drop shot.
Mallory later teamed with Mark Cordeiro to come back from a set down to win the men's Open doubles in a two and half hour battle with the Way brothers, Michael and Brian.
Mallory and Cordeiro won 6-7 (10-8), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
The Way brothers had been on the brink of victory in the second set as Michael served at 5-3 up but was broken when he hit a backhand volley into the net.
Mallory later missed a tournament treble when he teamed with Tara Lambert and went down to Mark Cordeiro and Jill Finnigan 6-4, 6-1.
In another classic battle, Gill Butterfield ended the run of visitor Yvone Van Nostrand, winning the ladies singles Open in surprisingly easy fashion, 6-1, 6-1.
"She simply outplayed me,'' said Van Nostrand later. "She was better on the day, consistent and made no mistakes. When anyone plays steady like that they are going to win.'' Butterfield also won the ladies doubles Open, teaming up with Jill Finnigan to beat Kelly Holland and Tara Lambert 6-1, 6-3.
In the men's 65 singles, King Van Nostrand had to forfeit his final against Dick Mount because of injury.
Today sees the start of the Coral Beach Invitational, which will feature several of the same players who competed in last week's tournament.
Ricky Mallory: three-set victory over Greg Frigerio.
