Maxwell sizzles, Smith fizzles during season-opening action

The 1993-94 motocross season got underway at Coney Island on a newly refurnished and prepared track which was put together with the help of BCAU members and the Agriculture and Fisheries Department.

Most of the major riders are back, though on different bikes and in different classes. Moving up from the 80cc is the current champion Chris Maxwell and Michael Burgess while former number one Kemo Simons goes for his second 80cc title with Jamel Hassell as chief competition.

The 125B class looks like it will be the one to watch with five class champions between them heading the line-up with Aaron Pace making his debut in a new Suzuki. Moving up from the 125C to 125B is American Devin Moss on a new Honda while also with new Hondas is the three man Honda Bermuda team of 250B Ed Jones, Justin Belboda and Ras Mykkal.

Kemo Smith got a good start in the first 80cc moto but fell after a few laps as Hassell took over to win the first race with Simons second. Simons dominated the remaining motos over Hassell as Shaki Easton was third with a fourth and two thirds.

There was a great battle for the 125C class between Chris Maxwell on a new Yahama and Kyle Constable (Honda), Leroy Maxwell (Yahama) and Michael Burgess (Kawasaki). Maxwell, the current 80cc number one, carried his winning ways with two wins over Constable.

Aaron Pace put his new Suzuki in first place with a hat-trick over Devon Moss up from the 125C division while Malcolm Raynor was third. Hard luck rider for the day was Belboda.
