One of Bermuda's best two-sport stars will be taking up a third tomorrow.

Dwight Basden, who played striker for Vasco and is a batsman and part-time bowler for Willow Cuts, will test his boxing skills when he enters the ring during a six-bout fight card at Bermuda College.

A member of the national soccer squad which returned two weeks ago from the Shell Caribbean Cup tournament in the Cayman Islands, Basden will take on Jerome Caines in what Bermuda Amateur Boxing Association president Mannix Simmons figures could be the highlight of the night.

Basden has boxed once before -- he won -- and has "good hands,'' Simmons said.

In other bouts, Charles Signor takes on Lorenzo Burch, Quincy Arorash meets Jerome Dowling, Ronald Gibbons fights Lionel Furbert, Brent Palmer goes against Jeff Baron and Kacey Smith tussles with Jahvon Washington. Two exhibition bouts will also be held.

Eight of the fighters train with the West End Boxing Club, run out of Simmons' home, and three will represent Alan (Forty) Rego's Warwick club. BABA are currently attempting to acquire a permanent facility.

Action gets underway at 8.00 p.m. The ring has been set up at Stonington Campus gym in order to promote a "first-class, family'' atmosphere, Simmons said.

"We're trying to encourage people to get into boxing,'' he added. "They don't necessarily need to box competitively, just get involved in the fitness side: Medicine ball, skipping and aerobic exercises.

"It's a great stress reliever.''
