Opener Foggo inspires East
West Select 107-7 Chris Foggo struck 68 runs and Bennett Phipps, Steven West and Mackie Crane combined to take six wickets to spearhead the East to victory in the Under-16 All-Star match at Lord's on Saturday.
Solid batting by the East saw them take an initiative that they were to hold until rain interrupted play at 4.40 p.m. with their opponents reeling and only 15 overs remaining.
The East were then declared winners on a faster run rate when no further play was possible.
In addition to the fine innings by opener Foggo, others among the runs for the East were Oliver Pitcher with 24, Shannon Raynor (19) and Stephen West, Landro Minors and skipper Stevie Outerbridge with 15 apiece.
Foggo and Minors laid the foundation with a sound 54 during their opening stand while Foggo and Pitcher followed with a stand of 76 for the second wicket.
Jason Williams was the most successful bowler for the West with three for 35 off 10 overs while Shane Hollis had three for 42 off 10 overs, including a maiden. Roland Rhones returned two for 35 off 5.4 overs.
Keman Tucker spearheaded the West in reply with an innings of 22 but most of his team-mates found the bowling difficult to play. Quinton Jones followed with 16 and Roland Rhones 14.
Bennett Phipps was the best bowler for the East with two for 10 off six overs while Steven West had two for 14 off six overs and Mackie Crane two for 29 off five overs. Oliver Pitcher returned one for two off two overs.
While he would have liked to have seen a better turnout of senior players and parents, El James, president of Bermuda Cricket Board of Control, expressed his delight over the success of the youth league after presenting the trophy to the captain of the East.
"This weekend has been the culmination of what we consider to have been a successful youth tournament. We have seen some splendid games. It has been a tremendous season for us and the boys, and now we look forward to next year when we hope to see it become even bigger and better,'' said James.
"The revival of youth cricket has been successful firstly because of the support of sponsors Shell, BF&M and John Barritts combined with the hard work of Randy Horton and his Youth Development committee.
"We are excited and anxious to build on this one because we've proved that there is talent here, talent that has the potential of competing at an international level in their age groups if given the chance and that's what we plan to do. The future does look good for Bermuda cricket after all.''
