Pan-Am draw `the worst possible' -- Darrell

Bermuda have been paired against Brazil in the opening round of the Pan-Am Games.

In the event the Bermuda Under-23 team's technical advisor kept his remarks to a bare minimum.

"How did they come up with that kind of draw, I just don't know,'' he said, shaking his head. "It is the worst possible draw.'' Of course it is not just the mighty Brazilians who await Bermuda in Argentina in March. Chile and Costa Rica are also in the draw.

Darrell was speaking moments after watching Bermuda's Under-23 team collapse to the United States Under-21 side in a warm-up tournament in Orlando's Seminole Sports Training Centre.

Head coach Mark Trott was also the master of the understatement in reacting to the draw. "Its a difficult group for us,'' he mused.

But he added more brightly: "At the end of the day we have to take whatever comes our way. They will all be good teams in the final.'' Trott also saw the draw as a chance for Bermuda's budding stars to rub shoulders with the world's best.

"It is the greatest opportunity of their lives,'' said Trott.

Today's confrontation with Germany's Bayer Leverkusen will give them a full taste of things to come.

On the recent soccer shake-up in which Carlton (Pepe) Dill was appointed chairman of a six-man coaching committee, Darrell gave a nod of approval.

"He (Dill) has my vote,'' he said.

Darrell added: "I think it is necessary to have a coaching committee and we need to have somebody to give direction.'' Dill had all the qualifications to be that man, said Darrell.

He pointed to Dill's experience in the Pan-Am Games, saying that should stand Bermuda in good stead in Argentina.

On his own role in Orlando, Darrell said Trott was still learning the ropes as a head coach.

"I was brought along as a sounding board, somebody who can give advice,'' he said.
