Police pair lift title in play-off
Four Ball Championship at their first attempt at Port Royal yesterday.
However, they had to go an extra hole to pull off victory after Mark Dupuy and Gary Carr wiped out a two-stroke overnight lead to draw level at the end of 72 holes on 285 and send the tournament into a play-off.
Tim Carr and McRonald shot 75 yesterday, their highest round of the four days, while Dupuy and Gary Carr fired 73 which turned out to be the best score under tricky conditions.
But Carr and McRonald bounced back in the sudden death play-off, parring the first hole while their opponents suffered a bogey five.
"It was a good challenge, the course was playing quite tough, it was really windy,'' said McRonald, who along with his partner was playing in the tournament for the first time.
"It seemed to be more breezy today and the greens were very fast and very tricky. It's a great pleasure to win.'' Three-time champions Bill Pitt and Henry Ascento saw their hopes of a fourth straight victory go out of the door with a one-over-par 72 on Saturday and 78 yesterday. They finished eight strokes back in third place.
In the women's division, Dot Spiro and Elizabeth White emerged as champions by just one stroke after reclaiming the lead they lost on Saturday to Cherie Page and Carol Owens.
Going into yesterday's final round, Spiro and White trailed by two strokes after shooting an 89 on Saturday while Page and Owens carded an 85. But yesterday Spiro and White turned things around with an 84 for a 255 total as Page and Owens could only manage an 87 to finish with a three-round score of 256.
