Six-goal Town turn up the heat

Southampton Rangers 2 Dandy Town will need just one point from tomorrow night's re-arranged clash with North Village to qualify for the Dudley Eve Trophy after they hit Rangers for six at St. John's Field yesterday.

Raymond Beach and Darron Simons helped themselves to two goals apiece as Andrew Bascome's side played some sparkling football and made the Premier Division's basement club pay for some slipshod defending and the needless sending off of Craig Darrell.

Devarr Boyles and Paul Cann were the other Town scorers, while Ascento Russell and Janeiro Tucker found the net for the visitors.

The result leaves Town level on points with Wolves and needing to avoid defeat against the league leaders to seal fourth place at the halfway stage of the season and with it, a berth in the Dudley Eve Christmas tournament.

Town could have clocked up a double-figure tally but for some wasteful finishing and the stylish performance left head coach Bascome eagerly anticipating the showdown with the league leaders at BAA Field.

When their game clicks, Town's football is arguably as attractive as any side on the Island, thanks to the flamboyance of players like Beach, Cann, Simons and Reggie Tucker, who were all in the mood to show off their talents yesterday.

Beach put them ahead in only the second minute, when he held off a defender and steered the ball high into the net.

Beach twice hit the side netting and Boyles the post as Town enjoyed complete dominance, but it wasn't until the 35th minute that Boyles netted the second with a 15-yard drive into the top corner after Rangers had failed to clear Devon Binns' corner.

Rangers hit for six From Page 37 A loss of concentration by the Town defence let in Ascento Russell to pull one back just three minutes later with a crisp low shot to the right of Town 'keeper Jerome Usher.

And a minute later it was nearly 2-2 when Russell headed just over the top from Craig Darrell's superb right-wing cross.

Rangers suffered a blow they could ill afford five minutes into the second half when Craig Darrell earned himself a red card from referee Anthony Mouchette for a pointless foul tackle, his second bookable offence.

And in the 55th minute, Town rubbed it in with their third goal, a mishit shot by Simons after a one-two with Beach which bobbled through 'keeper Randy Darrell's hands.

Rangers kept their hopes alive by reducing the deficit to 3-2 thanks to a wickedly swerving 25-yard drive by Janeiro Tucker three minutes later.

But that was as good as it got for Rangers' coach Edgar Smith, who saw his men fall further behind in the 62nd minute to Simons' left-footed drive just inside the far post to round off a delightful move including Beach and Cann.

Beach made it 5-2 from close range 10 minutes from time after Lionel Furbert's free kick had been blocked by the defensive wall and Cann made the most of slack marking to net Town's sixth with a side-footed shot four minutes later.
