Stars complete a trophy treble
St. David's 164 Western Stars completed an amazing reversal of form when they lifted their third trophy of the season at Southampton Oval yesterday.
A year ago the St. John's Road club finished their campaign empty-handed.
But yesterday they romped to a 94-run victory over St. David's in the TeleBermuda Champion of Champions final to wrap up a trophy treble.
The triumph came on the heels of victories in the Central Counties and the Knockout Cup.
Add to that a second place finish in the league, and skipper/coach Arnold Manders had every reason to be pleased with his team's performance.
"It's been a good season for us. I feel happy for the players who did so well. It was great for us to finish on such a high note and with three trophies,'' said Manders.
Just as he had all season, Manders led by example, striking a fierce 72 to lead Stars to a total which always seemed out of their opponents' reach.
Manders, with five sixes and four fours, put on 54 with his vice-captain Hasan Durham during a seventh-wicket stand. Durham scored an unbeaten 26.
Stars had wobbled during the early stages of their innings when Treadwell Gibbons (17) and Jermaine Postlethwaite (2) were out with just 37 runs on the board. But Albert Steede, who made 48, including six fours, and Cleon Scotland (7) took the score to 77 before Scotland was dismissed.
Steede stayed around and Ricky Brangman (27) and Manders then continued the good work.
The only St David's bowler with respectable figures was Lionel Cann who returned two for 40 off 11 overs, including a maiden.
Without suspended player-coach Clay Smith and veteran Allen Richardson, who is also banned, the Eastern Counties champs always had their backs against the wall -- even after including medium pace bowler Herbie Bascome and veteran batsman Wendell Smith as guest players from St. George's.
Their hopes of overhauling Stars' formidable total vanished early as opener Phillip Pitcher ((3) was dismissed with just eight runs on the board and the next five wickets then fell for a meagre 58 -- including those of Smith for eight and skipper Sammy Robinson for three.
O.J.Pitcher proved to be the best of the St. David's bats, as he made an unbeaten 43, watching as wickets tumbled around him.
Pitcher, batting at number six, struck five fours and batted for 116 minutes, falling just short of what would have been a deserved half-century.
The teenager showed confidence from the beginning, twice driving Allan Brangman through the covers for four for his first two scoring strokes.
He enjoyed useful partnerships with Del Hollis (18), Reginald Pitcher (15) and Herbie Bascome (25), but Stars' attack made sure of victory with seven overs remaining.
Treadwell Gibbons was top bowler for Stars with three for 36 from 10 overs while Gary Brangman had two for 12 from seven overs and Durham two for 31 from 8.3 overs. Allan Brangman returned figures of two for 40 from seven overs.
League champions Hemisphere Leg Trappers completed the season in tremendous style when they thrashed Watford Sports Club by 95 runs in the Commercial Cricket League Knockout final at blustery Sea Breeze Oval yesterday.
Graham Strange (41), Chris Fleming (37) and James Swan (23 not out) were the chief run-getters as Leg Trappers posted a challenging 168 for six in their allotted 40 overs after being sent in. Terence Corday (three for 28) and Blake West (two for 39) were the pick of the Watford attack on a slow pitch.
Watford began their reply brightly, reaching 40 for one in 13 overs, but the west enders, seeking their third successive Knockout title, collapsed to 73 all out in the 33rd over.
Only openers Andrew Paynter (13) and Terry Ward (12) reached double figures as leg-break bowler Damion Henderson left the innings in tatters.
Henderson, who claimed four for 21 from eight overs, was given good support by opening bowler David Hosier (two for 29), Gary Proctor (two for 17), Swan (one for two) and Strange (one for three).
Scores: Hemisphere Leg Trappers 168-6 innings closed, Watford Sports Club 73 in 32.2 overs.
