The quest for the Pepsi National Championships began on Sunday and the early signs pointed to a highly competitive season on the Coney Island track.
National champion Robbie Smith sat out the meet as his new bike was still not available. But when it does arrive, the defending champion can expect plenty of competition with some six riders gunning for the number one spot.
On Sunday, Kemo Simons took top honours in the 125B class when he ran away with three firsts for a maximum 45 points. Kyle Constable, Charles Butterfield, Duprey Joell and Neilson DeGraffe all shared the lead at various times but in each race it was the Suzuki of Simons which got the checkered flag first.
DeGraffe was second in race one before adding two thirds while Justin Belboda had three fourths for third overall on the day.
Mark Hatterley was the best of the 125C riders, finishing first overall with two firsts and a fourth while Ali Hatterley had two thirds and a second for second overall.
Shaki Easton looked like starting the season in the 80cc class with a win in the first race. But after riding into a clear lead following an early pile-up, he fell over a jump and lost his advantage.
Steven Panchaud, in his first race in the class, won the opening race but had to settle for second overall after he could only manage a third and a fourth in the next two races.
Sean DeSilva took honours with a fourth and two firsts, while Easton recovered to post two seconds.
The Pee Wee classes are now low in numbers after after three riders advanced to the 60cc class. Brandon DeSilva led the PW 50s with three firsts and Pierre Davis did likewise in the PW 80s.
The four 60cc riders put on a good show for the spectators as they traded positions on each lap before Jakai Brimmer came out on top with two firsts and a fourth for 38 points. Gary Cann was next after a fourth, second and first for 35 points, just a point ahead of Aaron Cannonier who had 34 points from two seconds and a third.
Ricardo Nottingham was the lone 250cc rider.
The next Pepsi National meet is this Sunday when more bikes are expected on the track.
