Town step up title chase
Wolves' Martonmere Cup success became but a distant memory as they slumped at St. John's Field yesterday, and now find themselves in danger of dropping into the relegation zone.
But while Wolves enter troubled waters, Town will no doubt be lifted by this emphatic win which should further boost confidence as they make a run at the championship.
Three more points keep them in second place, just two behind leaders North Village.
The home side snatched a 1-0 lead on a penalty by Carlos Smith after 37 minutes and added two more goals in the second half by Smith and young front running schemer Raymond Beach who was a menace to the beleaguered Wolves defence all day.
Once Town found their rhythm there could have been more goals with Darron Simons and Devarr Boyles both missing great chances from close range.
But few would deny that Town got a gracious call after 37 minutes when referee Lyndon Raynor awarded a penalty for a foul after consulting his assistant Vance Campbell.
College student Joey Rego, who seemed to be unsettled in his left full back position, was adjudged to have pulled down the ambitious Beach although the referee allowed play to continue until he saw the assistant's flag raised.
Smith, as he normally does these days, converted the spot kick.
Although Wolves had matched Town until this incident, it was Town who finished the half stronger with goalkeeper Brown advancing to block a point-blank shot from Darron Simons.
Wolves faded further in the second half with coach Brown forced to beef up his midfield by substituting his mainstay in the middle Ashton Thomas after 66 minutes.
Town took the initiative and gradully wore down their opponents to the degree that even centre-back Diallo Sharrieff started to look slow and inept.
Rego left Carlos Smith unmarked and the latter hammered home a cross from Paul Cann after 56 minutes to make it 2-0. Then Beach got the third when Cann masterfully dribbled around Sharrieff and laid on a fine cross for Beach to score from close in.
Wolves had a scoring chance when the score was 2-0 but goalkeeper Jason Smith palmed away a blast from Tori Davis and right at the end Smith tipped another effort, a header by Wolves substitute Shaki Crockwell, over the bar.
Town finished the game with several misses and should have come away with an even more comprehensive triumph.
