Umpires halt match following fan abuse
Somerset 101 Umpires George Francis and Wilton Woolridge were forced to halt this Premier Division match at Somerset for about 10 minutes yesterday after spectators on the southern bank directed abuse at both they and Bailey's Bay players.
The two officials walked off in the final session, leaving the Bay team and the two batsmen on the field while they voiced their concern to club officials about the fans' behavour.
"I took it very, very seriously,'' Francis said after the match. "Clubs have their officials at hand to make sure these things don't happen. But it's been happening for years and something needs to be done about it.'' Just a couple of weeks ago Bermuda Football Association officials met with referees to discuss their concerns about safety at soccer matches, and Francis noted the umpires were now facing the same type of problems.
"This is leading to something and it is something the clubs need to look at,'' said the veteran umpire.
The match had begun late at 12.30 and Bay quickly made up for lost time with some fast scoring after Somerset had won the toss and sent them in to bat.
A second-wicket stand of 79 between captain Chris Smith and Ricky Hill laid the foundation for Bay's total of 217 which enabled them to declare when tea was taken at 3.44. Hill was high man with 57 from 64 balls with seven fours and three sixes while Smith supported with 37 off 41 balls.
Next high men for the league champions were Irving Romaine with 43 not out and Roger Trott with 35. Sidney Simmons, the sixth Somerset bowler used, was their most successful, taking four for 61 from 11 overs including one in each of his first three overs.
Clarkie Trott and Jermaine Outerbridge both took three wickets as Somerset were dismissed for 101. Trott gave up 32 runs in 14 overs and Outerbridge, who removed top batsmen Reid Jones and Shaun Roberts with successive balls, had three for nine off seven overs with four maidens. Spinner Damon Edwards took two for 25 off 10 overs.
Jones was high man with 26 while Roberts scored 19, the pair adding 38 for the third wicket.
Warwick 240-6 PHC 98-6 PHC hung on for a tame draw in this derby match at Southampton Oval. Allen Richardson top scored for PHC with 39 and his dismissal, caught and bowled by Ritchie Foggo, earned Warwick one bonus bowling point.
Foggo claimed two for 17 and spinner Allan Wilkinson two for 30 to lead the Warwick bowling. All eight of Warwick's batsmen reached double figures, the high man being veteran El James with 51 while Peter Lee scored 34.
Spinner James Pace was the most successful PHC bowler, taking three for 57 off 22 overs of off-spin. Perry Maybury, playing his second match for PHC, and Cal Waldron took a wicket each as the Warwick batsmen held the upper hand after Nusum and Lee added 51 for the first wicket.
Social Club 83 St. George's 85-7 St. George's stayed in the hunt for the Premier Division title, predictably disposing of cellar dwelling Social Club by seven wickets at National Sports Club.
The east enders were spurred to victory by young paceman Ryan Steede, who accounted for three wickets, including the prized scalps of Dwayne (Streaker) Adams for 27 and captain Webster Mills (five), at a cost of 14 runs from eight overs.
Adams, weary after spending the night celebrating the birth of his first child, looked set for a high score, having stroked four fours, when he offered a chance off Steede's right arm, medium pace which Wendell Smith promptly snapped up.
Aiding Steede were vice-captain Ricky Hodsoll and Graham Fox with two wickets apiece.
St. George's made hard work of reaching the target, although the final outcome was never in jeopardy.
Social Club saw a glimmer of hope as opener Dexter Smith (12) and Troy Hall (0) fell to successive balls from Michael Smith with the score on 17 and were further encouraged when Wendell Smith went for 19 with the score on 48.
However, skipper Fox and Wade saw the visitors to safety, Fox managing four fours in his team high 27, while Wade was 16 not out.
Southampton 138 Police 139-4 Dwayne Leverock destroyed Southampton with both bat and ball as he put his all-round talents on display at Police Field.
Leverock first produced a devastating spell of left-arm, spin bowling, ripping through the batting order to return figures of seven for 37 from 19.3 overs and followed this with an accomplished 44 not out to spur Police to victory.
The burly, leg-break artist was called on after Southampton had seized control of the match by roaring to 71 for the loss of just one wicket.
However, Leverock's introduction started a stunning collapse with the dismissal of captain Olin Jones -- bowled for just one -- and ended with the visitors tumbling to 138 all out.
Top scorer for Rangers was David Stoneham, but he too finally fell to Leverock, caught and bowled for 46.
Police were in trouble at 48 for five when Leverock again took centre stage, although he had an accomplice in the form of Ferdinand Thorne, the pair engaging in an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 91.
Thorne was the more dominant partner, his unbeaten 48 containing seven fours, while Leverock picked his shots, lashing five boundaries in 44 not out.
Western Stars 162 St. David's 91 Albert Steede continued his fine batting yesterday when he stroked an unbeaten 51 to help Premier Division leaders Western Stars to a 71-run victory over St.
David's at Lord's.
Also making major contributions for Stars were spin bowlers Arnold Manders and Hasan Durham and pace bowler Allan Brangman. Manders had three for 16 off 10 overs, including five maidens, Durham had three for 34 off eight overs while Brangman took two for 12 off nine overs.
St. David's skipper Lionel Cann was top bat with 40 while Shea Pitcher was the only other player in double figures with 12.
Stars appeared in no hurry for runs when they batted with the first 50 taking 81 minutes and the 100 in 150 minutes.
But they still reached a respectable total and were able to declare at 4.37, thanks to Steede's performance which saw him strike eight fours in his half century.
Flatts 144 Nationals 145-7 Nationals narrowly beat Flatts, winning by three wickets with just one ball to spare at Devonshire Rec.
Bruce Perinchief led the Nationals bowling with five for 19 while team-mate David Gibbs had three for 40 and Brendon Woolridge two for 31. Millard Bean was Flatts' top bat with 52 while McDonald Woolridge struck 33.
In reply, Graham Strange top scored for Nationals with 42, Jason Lewis hit 34 and Dennis Trott 25. Derek Wright claimed three for 41.
SWIPE -- Flatts batsman Rodney Woolridge takes a swipe at a leg-side delivery during the match against Nationals at Devonshire Rec. yesterday, while wicketkeeper Quinn Outerbridge looks on.
