Veteran Davis topples top seed

off easily the biggest upset of the 66th Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitational at Coral Beach yesterday when he stunned top seed Carl Forsythe in the Men's 55 event.

His 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 victory came in four hours -- the longest contest on record at the tournament.

Afterwards, Davis, who has captured more than 20 titles in his career, said he had been close to giving up.

But he added: "I looked over the net and saw that Carl appeared to be as tired as I was, so I started to drop a few near the net to make him run and it paid off. But really I was a point away from giving up.'' Forsyth, from Connecticut, smiled wrily as he said: "This certainly was befitting of a final.'' In another top men's encounter, top ranked Michael Way brought back some memories when he faced an old foe, Dean Mello, for the first time in 15 years.

Way ran out a convincing winner 6-3, 6-2 to set up an intriguing final against Greg Frigerio, who disposed of Eldon Daniels.

In the ladies competition, two outstanding teams had to fight from behind to advance into the next round. Gill Butterfield and Alice Duff battled from 1-4 in the first set to defeat Angela Stephens and Julie Lunn 7-6, 6-1, while the combination of Kelly Holland and Heidi Boyle showed even greater spirit to rally from 1-4 and 0-40 down in the first to win 7-6, 7-5.

Another mild upset came when men's third seed Dave Schupp beat fellow American Stephen Roiter 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.

MOVING ON IN STYLE -- Greg Frigerio shows good form on his way to an easy two set victory over Elvin Daniels in the BLTC Invitational at Coral Beach yesterday.
