Village too good for Town

Leaders North Village all but killed off Dandy Town's Premier Division title hopes with this emphatic three-goal victory at St.John's Field on Saturday night.

Maximum points enabled the Red Devils to hold onto their two point lead over second placed PHC, but Town dropped to sixth and are now eight points off the pace.

Town's recent run had put them in a position to challenge for the championship but against the leaders they were unable to find any sort of rhythm.

Village, while not playing at their best, were still a step ahead of their opponents and took advantage of their chances when they were within striking range.

Kentoine Jennings gave them a 1-0 lead at the half and further goals came after the break from Neil Robinson and Tafari Outerbridge.

Town showed some fighting spirit at the start when Village goalkeeper Nyon Steede was forced to punch a scorching 15-yarder from Paul Cann around the post for a corner. But this wasn't a sign of things to come.

Village, remaining calm and composed, slowly came into the game and had close calls from both Elliott Jennings and Kimande Binns.

After 13 minutes, Jennings hit a 16 yard shot high and Binns headed a Robinson corner inches over the bar after 16 minutes.

With Michael Hansey and Robinson prominent as Village unleashed attack after attack, the go-ahead goal always seemed imminent. It came after 35 minutes when a free kick by Elliott Jennings was headed down by Kentoine Jennings and goalkeeper Antoine Lightbourne was surprisingly unable to punch it away, the ball instead rolling over the line off a defender.

Town found some momentum early in the second half but were stopped in their tracks when Village, on the counter attack, took a 2-0 lead through Robinson who drilled home a shot from 18 yards after a cross from Elliott Jennings.

Town's frustration increased when Kris Martin missed a penalty after 55 minutes, made a desperate move to fight back by bringing on forwards Carlos Smith and Darron Simons but it was Village who found the net again.

The presence of the duo did have some impact as Town managed to lift their overall performance, but Simons missed a cross from Smith when he was within scoring range after 72 minutes and Smith himself blasted over two minutes later.

Village's defence held on gamely and during a counter attack it was Outerbridge who thundered home a vicious header from a Kevin Jennings' cross.
