Webb hat-trick earns Wolves Dudley debut
Nathan Webb grabbed his first hat-trick of the season yesterday at Devonshire Rec. as Wolves qualified for the Dudley Eve Trophy for the first time with their biggest win of the season.
With college students Joey Rego and John Barry Nusum making their First Division debuts, Wolves always looked in control after leading 3-0 at half time.
And though there was a period of recovery by Cougars early in the second half, Webb put the issue beyond doubt with the fourth goal in the closing minutes to beat the team's previous best win of 3-0 over Colts last weekend.
Of the 13 goals Wolves have scored in the league, seven have now come in the last two matches, and that should put the team on a high going into their Dudley Eve debut on Tuesday night. The draw for the double elimination tournament will be made today.
Like Wolves, Cougars were also coming off a big win last weekend when they downed bottom team Hamilton Parish 4-1. But they never recovered from Webb's eighth minute opener which came after a ball into the box saw Khari Sharrieff miskick right in front of goal. However the ball reached the far post where Webb scrambled it over the line.
Two goals in two minutes midway through the first half gave Wolves a comfortable 3-0 lead. A cross from the goal-line on the right by Sharrieff was pulled back towards the penalty spot and the unmarked Ellington Weldon had time to tee up before unleashing a firm shot that found the back of the net despite the efforts of Shawn Smith.
Webb added the third in the 27th minute, this time after the Cougars defence was opened again by a short pass into the box by Nusum for Webb to run through and score easily.
Referee Earlston Wolffe, officiating in his first First Division match after the assigned referee did not show, made two bookings late in the half when Cougars defender Wendell Swan was cautioned for fouling Nusum and Wolves captain Anthony Thomas for a foul on Stephen Coddington.
Cougars threatened to turn the match around after the restart when they immediately put Wolves under pressure.
Hewvonnie Brown in the Wolves goal was being kept busy as he parried a cross from Maxwell Dill and then blocked the follow-up shot from Jahkee Smith.
Wolves should have added a fourth soon after when Webb used his speed to break away from the Cougars defence before setting up Nusum whose weak shot rolled past the far post.
Brown made another good save to keep his second straight clean sheet, this time after being blown down for too many steps. Galvin Butterfield's free kick from 11 yards got through the wall but Brown blocked the shot.
Three minutes from the end Webb completed his hat-trick, with Sharrieff again involved. This time he provided the perfect cross from the left and Webb had the easy task of sidefooting home from just four yards.

Boulevard 0 Dandy Town 0 Dandy Town blew the chance of finishing top of the pack in the First Division at the halfway stage of the season by being held to a draw in this match at Lord's against lowly Boulevard.
With coach Mark Trott abroad on vacation for the Christmas holidays, Town's coaching team, headed by Scott Morton, were not able to get the result they so desperately sought.
Now they go into the Dudley Eve competition holding down third place, one point behind leaders Vasco who are ahead of North Village on goal difference.
Town had sufficient chances to have taken a decisive edge by the interval despite Boulevard's spirited challenge. But time and time again they held their heads in dismay as efforts went high or wide.
The trend began as early as the second minute when Paul Cann's shot from 19 yards came back off the bar and was cleared.
McLee Smith and Wolde Place were then guilty of glaring misses. First Devon Binns raced down the left flank and crossed for Smith to blast over from 12 yards and then Place did likewise from Cann's ball in.
Town also felt down on their luck when a header by Boulevard right back Robert Wilson, seemingly destined for goal, hit the upright and was cleared.
Then a Boulevard defender hacked clear from under his crossbar after Kris Martin's corner had caused chaos.
But during one of their rare raids, as early as the eighth minute, Boulevard had what was probably the best chance of the game.
Town knocked off the top From Page 25 Otis Minors powered down the left wing and delivered the ball into the middle for the unmarked Shakia Crockwell but he incredibly put the ball over from just inside the six yard box.
Play disintegrated in the second half with chances for both teams few and far between.
Town brought on top strikers Darron Simons and Carlos Smith, Simons after 65 minutes and Smith after 82 minutes, and the appearance of Simons did add some thrust to their attack.
And he was unlucky after 76 minutes when he masterfully rounded Kenny Darrell only to see goalkeeper Andre Hendrickson dive to his right to save a fierce shot from 16 yards.
Boulevard fought back with three consecutive corners but their attack lacked the ability to finish.
Boulevard's defence was handicapped after 30 minutes when left back Albert Caisey was taken off after a clash in midfield.
