Wright fights off Cormack challenge

cross-country victory over a new 12 kilometre course, starting and finishing at Astwood Park, on Saturday.

Wright, who has dominated this season's series winning all but one race, appeared to be leading comfortably half way through Saturday's event. But Cormack, winner of last weekend's Elbow Beach half-marathon, closed the gap over the last couple of miles to finish just seven seconds back.

On a tough course which saw runners negotiate road, trails, sand dunes and the soft sand of Warwick Long Bay, Wright clocked 45 minutes 54 seconds and Cormack 46.01.

Jamal Hart took third place in 47.15, just seven seconds in front of first master Harry Patchett (47.22) with Brett Forgesson placing fifth in 47.51.

Meanwhile, over a 6K course Jennifer Fisher maintained her 100 percent record in cross country this season, winning easily in 25.46.

Julia Hawley crossed the line in second place in 27.23 followed by Jane Christie, the first master, in 27.47.

Saturday's junior events saw a good entry of 67 runners with Collin Anderson and Laura Turner winning the boys and girls secondary races.

Anderson was a convincing winner over the 6K course, clocking 24.22 with Kris Hedges placing second in 28.10 and KiJah Butterfield third in 36.02.

Turner maintained her good form in the series, finishing the 1.9 mile course in 14.32, half a minute up on second placed Patrina Swan (15.02). Velvet Smith placed third in 15.09.

The boys primary race saw first time competitor Josh Kressin make a big impression as he held off Giles Spurling (12.16) to win in 12.12. Third place over the 1.4 mile course went to Matthew Trott in 12.19.

Emma Rego led home the primary girls in 13.10 ahead of Shimika Telford (13.23) and Kriseverett Sheill (13.35).
