A busy weekend is in store for local runners with the national junior and senior cross country championships planned this Saturday at Ferry Reach
At stake on Saturday could be a place in the Island's junior and senior teams for next year's CAC cross country championships in Colombia.
Kavin Smith, winner of every senior men's event this season, has already locked up his spot on the team but the likes of brothers Michael and Jay Donawa, Jamal Hart and Brett Forgesson will all be pressing for selection.
Similarly, Anna Eatherley has dominated the women's events, although she could be pushed this weekend by the improving Emily Ferguson and Lynn Patchett, who won the last race at Astwood Park in Eatherley's absence.
Among the juniors, Richard Walcott and Gabriel Wilkinson should challenge in the 16-18 boys' group, while Mark Morrison, victorious in a New York Road Runners' Club cross-country race on Sunday, can expect some tough competition from Henry Talbot in the 13-15 age group.
The first races are scheduled for 9.00 a.m.
Sunday sees the third annual Bermuda Public Services Association 10K in which Smith and Eatherley are expected to defend their respective titles.
Starting at 9.00 a.m., the route will take runners from Cedar Avenue in Hamilton, east on Angle Street, south on Court Street to Front Street, along Crow Lane over South roundabout and east to Brighton Hill via South Shore.
Once over Brighton Hill, competitors will head west on Middle Road up Barker's Hill onto North Shore and west to Black Watch Pass before heading along Dutton Avenue to the finish on Ewing Street opposite Dellwood School.
Walkers will compete on a shorter route of 3.2 miles.
The event is being organised in conjunction with Swan's Running Club with money raised going towards the Bermuda Diabetes Association.
SOCCER SOC Young Men's Social Club and Boulevard will make their second trips westward in the space of four days tomorrow night when they travel to Somerset for FA Cup replays.
The draw for the second round of the competition was delayed yesterday to allow the final two places to be determined. Fourteen of the 16 teams, including defending cup champions Devonshire Colts who had a bye, are already through, including five from the Commercial League.
On Sunday at Malabar Field, Social Club scored a late equaliser against Ireland Rangers to force a replay while Southampton Rangers allowed 10-man Boulevard to snatch at 2-2 draw at Southampton Oval.
Social Club and Ireland Rangers will meet in the 7.00 opener and Boulevard and Southampton in the 9.00 match.
League action continues on Thursday and Friday night when Vasco meet PHC on Thursday and Wolves take on Rangers on Friday night at Devonshire Rec.
WOMEN'S SOCCER SOC Genevana Simmons netted all four goals as PHC beat Wolves Girls 4-1 in women's soccer action at Devonshire Rec. on Friday night, while Rude Girls put seven past Prospect without reply.
Though Jahnikia Lightbourn of Wolves drew first blood in the 23rd minute, PHC quickly rallied to take a 2-1 lead by half-time as Simmons struck in the 35th and 40th minutes.
Simmons completed her hat-trick in the 65th minute and added a fourth in the 79th to make certain of victory.
Two players were booked in separate incidents, Antoinette Williams of PHC and Shae-Vone Simmons of Wolves.
Players-of-the-match were Simmons of PHC and Michelle Perinchief of Wolves.
Rude Girls showed why they are the league champions, hammering a despondent Prospect 7-0.
Prospect's goalkeeper Sarine Babb could do little but gaze hopelessly as shot after shot rained past her into the net.
Sakena Clarke and Shivon Washington each netted twice while Erica Russell, Tamisha Darrell and Catherine Clarke got the others. Outstanding players were Darrell of Rude Girls and Prospect's Lisa Clarke.
On Sunday at BAA Field, Dandy Stars clinched their second win, beating BAA 2-1.
The match was uneventful until the 43rd minute when Christina Jones of Stars found the back of the net with ease.
Jones added a second just minutes into the second half while Isabele Sousa's goal near the end of regulation time proved to be too little too late for the ladies in blue.
Christina Jones of Stars and Viera Gorette of BAA were the outstanding players.
MOTOCROSS SCR American Dave Ottel blew through Coney Island like the famous winds of his native Chicago as he took honours in the 125 B class last Thursday and on Sunday.
Ottel, a professional rider for two years, won all six of his races over the two days.
Otis Ingham carried the Bermuda flag, placing second both days after being lapped by Ottel. Ingham had to borrow a bike after his seized and then he survived a nasty crash with Jamel Williams. Carlston Burgess placed third.
The 125C class, along with the top riders in the 80cc, put on a show with Steven Panchaud of the 80cc class finishing second to his brother Craig in one of the best races. Craig was first overall with Steven Oughton and Treadwell Nesbitt second and third.
