Adams holds off battling Eatherley
yesterday's second annual Partner-Re 5K, Bermuda's only all-female road race.
After suffering a sprained ankle in a fall last week, Eatherley, who has been dominant on the roads this year, indicated she would skip yesterday's event.
But with the ankle strapped, she appeared on the start line in a field of more than 100 and led through the early stages.
However, Front Street Mile winner Adams, more suited to the short distances, asserted her authority over the closing mile to win in 18 minutes, 30 seconds.
Eatherley followed in 19.00.
Third place went to 22-year-old Norwegian visitor Elizabeth Henie, a cross-country skier who competed in last year's world junior championships.
Henie clocked 19:14 while local race newcomer, American Alexandria Reck, who moved to the Island from California last December, placed fourth in 20:26.
Penelope Butterfield rounded out the top five in 21:00.
Carolyn Conway was the first Master (over 40) in 22:05 and Peggy Couper the first senior Master (over 50) in 23:41.
A separate race for walkers, which also attracted more than 100 women, saw Susannah Frith lead the field home in 32:21.
Frith's sister, acclaimed singer/songwriter Heather Nova, back on the Island on vacation, was also among the field.
In a junior event for girls under 16 over a distance of 2.5K, Shar-dae Whitter took first place in 13:24 ahead of Chloe Kempe (13:34) and Robyn Dickinson (13:42).
Race director Rose Jones noted the total field of 236 walkers and runners was 71 more than last year's inaugural event.
