Agony for Social Club as Rangers post record score

Social Club 34 In a match that will go down in the local record books -- if not the Guinness Book of Records -- Social Club made a statement of ultimate futility and Southampton one of total domination at St. John's Field yesterday.

The end witnessed a mammoth 441-run triumph for Rangers, who almost appeared embarrassed in posting a Premier League record 475 runs for the loss of just three wickets in their 50 overs.

Social Club's first error might have been that of showing up for a contest that was never such. However, in winning the toss and sending the visitors in to bat they ensured their worst nightmare.

Opener Keith Wainwright immediately took to a toothless bowling attack, flaying balls to all corners, while partner Olin Jones similarly scored at will at the other end.

Wainwright would bat throughout the innings, notching his first-ever double century as he and Jones put on a eye-popping 352 for the first wicket, before the latter was undone moments after passing the century mark, caught at long on off the bowling of Keith Lapsley. Jones blasted 14 fours and a six in his innings.

Ian Armstrong came in to partner Wainwright and they added a further 91 runs for the second wicket. Armstrong departed for 46 and was replaced by skipper Janeiro Tucker, who hit a quickfire 25.

Wainwright stood tall at the end, his unbeaten 225 including 12 sixes and 16 boundaries.

Then Social Club collapsed under the medium pace attack of Ryan Belboda and Gary Williams, with the former taking six for 15 and the latter three for 18.

High scorer for Social Club was Gary Williams with 17 not out, while seven players recorded ducks in the 34-run total.

Willow Cuts 159 St. David's 160-2 Allrounder Lionel Cann made his first appearance of the season and his presence in the St. David's line-up had an immediate impact as the league leaders stormed to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Willow Cuts.

Cann's medium pace bowling landed him three for 25 off nine overs as Cuts could only manage a modest 159.

Others chipping in with solid bowling spells were Rudell Pitcher with two for 17 off 5.3 overs, Sammy Robinson with two for 24 off 10 overs and skipper Del Hollis with two for 37 off 10 overs.

Cuts seemed to be heading for a challenging score when skipper Dexter Basden (40) and David Jones (23) added 48 for the third wicket, taking the score from 45 for two to 93. But once Jones became a victim of Hollis the Cuts batting fell apart.

Basden stayed but couldn't find a suitable partner, the only batsmen offering resistance being Gladwin Edness with 24 and Reggie Tucker with 15.

St. David's cruised to victory off 38.3 overs with openers Phillip Pitcher and Chris Foggo putting on 55 in quick time. Pitcher finished with 34 and Foggo 28 before Glenn Blakeney and O.J.Pitcher continued to hit out.

Blakeney was undefeated with 47, striking seven fours, while Pitcher was not out on 32 when victory was reached.

Somerset Bridge 145 Somerset CC 150-3 Skipper Wendell White stroked 50 not out and featured in a third-wicket stand of 85 with opener Alfred Carter (20) to lead Somerset to a seven-wicket victory at White Hill.

Chasing a target of 146, Somerset lost openers Tony Cheeseman (7) and Leon Place (3) before White and Carter added stability, coming together with the total at 32.

White dominated the stand with a variety of strokes, finishing with six fours and a six. Carter, willing to play a supportive role at the other end, was finally out with the score on 117 when he was caught off Adrian Burrows but White and new bat Craig Brangman (17 not out) added 33 to take the team to victory.

Earlier Kenny Maybury and White were responsible for reducing Bridge to 145.

Maybury took four for 27 off seven overs and White three for 15 off 6.5 overs.

Bridge rallied in the tail with the last three batsmen adding 55.
