Beach treble not enough
Acting captain Raymond Beach and goalkeeper Zane Hendrickson had vastly contrasting evenings as Bermuda three times fought back from behind to clinch a point in last night's rescheduled International Youth Tournament fixture at BAA Field.
Beach, wearing the skipper's armband in place of the injured Marlon Dill, grabbed a superb hat-trick which would almost certainly have won the hosts the match had Hendrickson not endured a nightmare evening between the posts.
He scored with a blistering free-kick after 17 minutes, slotted home a cool penalty in the 33rd and completed his hat-trick a quarter of an hour into the second half with a header at the back post.
But each time Bermuda were playing catch up.
Hendrickson's horrible night began in the 13th minute when, under pressure from US skipper Todd Brown, he dropped a hanging cross which Brown turned into the net despite Nadir Wade's vain attempt to clear off the line. Some referees might have awarded a foul and, indeed, Brown seemed to wait anxiously for official Leroy Wilson's ruling before celebrating the goal -- compensation for his effort which was wiped out in the floodlight-truncated first match on Sunday.
Then, in the 31st minute, the young keeper, known to be highly rated by coach Mark Trott, spilled an innocuous ball into the middle at the feet of Justin Moose, who gratefully accepted the gift.
And four minutes into the second half, after dealing uneasily with a swerving effort from Jake Jackson, he parried a weak header from the same player into the air and Moose jumped to nod home.
The result leaves Bermuda needing to beat Rangers tonight to be sure of a place in Friday's final.
There was no word late last night on how Bermuda's Under-21 team fared in their final CAC Games qualifying match against hosts St. Kitts. Telephone calls to the Bermuda team's hotel were not answered.
