Berkeley scores three as Rangers romp
The prospect of meeting North Village in the first round of the FA Cup apparantly did more to lift Island Rangers than Port Royal last night at Somerset.
And on that performance the Commercial Division side should provide better opposition for the First Division team on December 11, having scored a convincing victory thanks to a hat-trick by player-coach Troy Berkeley and another from Blaine Outerbridge.
Rangers' intentions were clear from the outset as the best of the early chances fell to them.
It took the Dockyard team just 10 minutes to break the deadlock as Berkeley opened his account with a free header at the far post after another former Somerset Trojans player Michael Bremar supplied the cross from the left.
Reed Lightbourne nearly scored an own goal to double the Rangers lead a few minutes later when his deflection was cleared off the line.
But in the 22nd minute Rangers did score again when Berkeley worked a one-two with Outerbridge and finished off the move.
Berkeley was a major threat and Island Rangers could easily have led by four or five goals at the half.
A brilliant save by 'keeper Stephen Pett in the 36th minute denied Berkeley his hat-trick after unleashing a fierce volley that looked destined for the back of the net.
Then in injury time the far post kept Bremar from adding to the score after he got into the middle on a corner he had taken and struck a firm shot through a crowded area.
The goals for Island Rangers kept coming in the second half when Berkeley went on a run in the 55th minute and provided a cross which Outerbridge converted.
Almost immediately Port Royal pulled one back when Winston Thomas squeezed the ball in at the far post after a good move.
And though Port Royal had more clear cut chances in the second half, Rangers wrapped it up five minutes from the end when Berkeley scored his third after finishing off a move started by Terrence Corday in the middle.
