Boulevard capitalise on Southampton's blunders

(after extra time) Defensive blunders by the Southampton defence handed Boulevard opportunities that led to two goals in this Challenge Cup first round clash between two Premier Division teams at Southampton Oval yesterday. Instead of coming away with a victory, Southampton now face a replay against opponents who fought bravely for most of the second half after having Vernon Eve sent off.

While the home team had enough chances to win, it was Boulevard who had the best of exchanges in the first half, taking a deserved lead through Shakia Crockwell who scored with a scorcher from 23 yards after just six minutes.

Without schemers Sheridan Ming and Kwame Tucker, Southampton took a while to settle and only some forceful running by Ascento Russell and Herbie Dillas caused the Boulevard defence any concern.

Southampton were busier when play re-started in the second half and took a decisive edge when Boulevard were reduced to 10 men after 48 minutes when referee Stuart Crockwell sent off Eve for apparent use of foul language.

Southampton were rewarded for lifting their tempo after 61 minutes when Jason Raynor, a hard working midfielder, drilled a shot home from 22 yards to make it 1-1.

And then the inevitable go-ahead goal came after 66 minutes when Dillas fired against the post only to see Craig Darrell follow up to hammer home the rebound from close range.

Just when Boulevard's cause seemed helpless goalkeeper Randy Darrell lost possession while attempting to clear the ball and the resulting scramble saw centre-back Donnie Charles handle the ball.

It was from the resulting spot kick that Dean Boyles was able to equalise.

Tuff Dogs 2 Prospect 3 (after extra time) Tuff Dogs will rue Kevin Mooney's glaring 73rd minute miss as First Division team Prospect twice came from behind to snatch victory at Somerset.

Tuff Dogs, a new Commercial League team playing in their first FA Cup tie, were determined to mark the occasion with a victory. And when they were rewarded for their early enthusiasm with the lead after just 10 minutes, one got the feeling an upset could be on the cards.

A short pass from big Prospect striker John Richmond was intercepted as Tuff Dogs raced upfield to score when Nathan Brown beat the advancing Andrew Bissell to the ball and steered it into an open goal.

Richmond brought Prospect back level in the 14th minute with the first of his two goals when the ball landed at his feet inside the box and he scored easily past Danny Faria.

The half finished with two more goals as first Tuff Dogs regained the lead in the 34th minute when Franco scored with a header from a Joe Carolo free kick on the left. And then two minutes before the break Tuff Dogs failed to clear a Prospect raid and Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock smashed home a brilliant volley from 25 yards.

The score stayed that way throughout the second half with Mooney having the chance to seal it when a through ball by Franco put him clear. The advancing Bissell missed the ball and with an open goal staring him in the face Mooney hurried his shot wide.

The Prospect winner finally came six minutes into the second period of extra-time when Richmond tapped the ball home from close range after a defender miskicked an intended clearance from a free kick on the right.

St. George's All-Stars 0 MR Onions 7 MR Onions peeled away from St. George's All-Stars with ease yesterday in this one-sided clash at Wellington Oval.

Some had tipped Commercial B tabletoppers St. George's to get the better of their Division A visitors who have yet to register a point.

But from the first suicidal backpass in the opening minute it was clear the home side were ill at ease and Onions could have had double figures.

Onions went ahead in the 14th minute after a speculative cross from Andy Robinson was seized upon by Stephen Ludgate who headed in at the far post.

A corner on the half hour mark was met with a downward header from Keith Donald which hapless defender Charles Steede could only block with his hand.

Steede went off and Onions went two up as Billy Spencer netted the penalty.

Just before half-time home striker Eugene Crockwell missed from close range after his team had latched onto a stray pass by Ludgate.

But from then on it was one-way traffic. Four minutes after the restart Gary Garnett chipped the keeper from 25 yards out after a neat one-two with Keith Donald.

Not to be outdone Billy Spencer scored with a similarly spectacular effort from an even tighter angle just four minutes later.

Keystone Cops style defending led to Onions fifth goal as Keith Donald notched from five yards out after a home defender had headed straight to him.

Onions sub Glenne Dunne scored with a cheeky effort when a low ball was hammered across the danger area. With his back to goal Dunne's insouciant drag back left stand-in keeper Dwayne Trott stranded.

But for comedy value nothing could top Billy Spencer's hat-trick goal. Spencer pressured the keeper from a backpass and the pair played a series of one twos against each other and the post before Spencer ended the farce and stabbed it over the line.

Ir.Rangers 1 Social Club 1 (after extra time) Ireland Rangers conceded their first goal of the season at Malabar Field yesterday and were forced into a replay by Social Club.

The First Division leaders took the lead through Michael Mendes in the 34th minute and it stayed that way until 10 minutes from the end when substitute Dennis Russell equalised for the former FA Cup champions.

Exiles 4 Belco 2 (after extra time) These two Commercial League were deadlocked 2-2 after regulation time at St.

John's Field and forced to go into extra-time when Exiles lifted their game to score a two-goal triumph over their tiring opponents.

No other information of the game was available last night.
