Boxing Day harness racing featured the two, three and four-year-old stake races at Vesey Street, but it was the four-year-olds who provided fans with
Colin Mello, driving Miss LL Dane, and Tuxedo Bowtie, driven by Nick DeCosta, came down the home stretch matching stride for stride. And at the finish it was Miss LL Dane ahead by just one-10th of a second. Speedway Jr, with owner-driver Judy Knights, was a close third.
The two-year-old stakes champion was Tell Me About It, owned and driven by Michael DeCosta. Arthur Hurst's Good Hands Charlie was second while Tux's Rocket finished third.
Francis DeSilva's speedy mare, Runt's Rocket, took three-year-old honours with Jennifer Time second and Crunchtime third.
As well as the stakes races there were also 14 heats for older trottingbreds.
Jamel Darrell is the new owner-driver of Todd's Ebony and he had a successful debut, winning heat five.
Anthony Rego won heat six with TW Second Try in 1:12.4 with Tom Matthews and Flame On second. Second Try now has one leg out of the 1:14-1:16/4 time bar while Flame On moves up to the 1:11/4-1:13/4 division.
Abby Dabby Doo and Just Cruisin each won two heats. Cruisin, with Bilal Shakir in the sulky, now has one leg out of the 1:11/4-1:13/4 time bar.
New Year's Day racing will feature the Bermuda Bred stakes races. Post time will be announced.
BASKETBALL BAS Mercy College women's team, a Division II school from New York, are playing three matches in Bermuda over the holidays, all at Bermuda College.
The visitors opened their tour with a game against Bermuda College last night.
And games two and three will be played today and tomorrow against Summer League champions Netts and a Bermuda Select, both matches starting at 7.00 p.m.
Mercy have had a slow start to their season, struggling to a 2-6 overall record after losing leading scorer and rebounder Lakia Waters through injury.
In New York Collegiate Athletic Conference action, Mercy have a 2-2 record and expect to be in the running for a conference play-off berth.
The Lady Flyers, under fifth year head coach Michelle Coyle, have returned seven of their top eight scorers from last year's 8-17 squad.
Mercy will now enjoy an extended break before returning to action on January 2 for a non-conference match-up with New York Tech. Their next conference showdown will be on January 6 against Molloy.
