Bridge, Social Club fail to show
on Saturday as St. David's and Warwick both advanced to the quarter-finals with wins by default.
St. David's won over Somerset Bridge who failed to show up at Lord's while Social Club couldn't raise a team for their match at Southampton Oval against Warwick.
The other five games went almost according to the form book although Southampton Rangers produced a mild upset with victory over Willow Cuts, while Cleveland's hopes of a third straight appearance in the final were dashed at Wellington Oval.
Second round matches are scheduled for June 13.
Somerset CC 123 Western Stars 126-3 Opener Albert Steede hammered an unbeaten 67 to lead Western Stars to a seven-wicket victory over Somerset at St. John's Field.
Batting first, Somerset were led by veteran Winston Reid with 50 not out while opener Steval Mendes scored 25 and Kelly Simmons 17. Reid batted at number nine and joined Raymond Simons (one) in a last-wicket stand that put on 52, taking the score from 71-9.
They finished with 123 off 35.1 overs.
Gary Brangman led Stars in bowling with three for 12 off 7.1 overs, including two maidens while captain Arnold Manders had three for 26 from eight overs, two of which were maidens. Spinner Hasan Durham returned two for 38 off nine overs.
Stars reached victory off 24.2 overs with Steede leading the way and Cleon Scotland following with 20.
Wendell White led Somerset's bowling with two for 37 off nine overs.
PHC 91 Flatts 92-6 Rahji Edness, Kevin Hurdle and Troy Dean combined to take seven wickets to help Flatts to a four-wicket victory over Flatts at Devonshire Rec.
Edness took three for 19 off nine overs, including two maidens, to lead the attack. Hurdle returned two for 21 off seven overs and two maidens while Dean had two for 33 off 10 overs.
Deverio Hassell was top bat for PHC with 25 while Kallan Johnston chipped in with 19 not out and Braxton Stowe 12.
Gershon Gibbons led Flatts in reply with 32 while Michael Burgess hit 17 and Quinn Outerbridge 14. Cal Waldron was top bowler for PHC with four for 19 off 6.5 overs.
Police 131 Devonshire Rec. 82 Richard Austin, Dennis Archer and Rohan Moore shared six wickets between them to spur Police to a 49-run victory over Devonshire Rec. in a short game at Police Field.
Batting first, Police ended their innings in just 27 overs with David Greenidge scoring 30. JaJa Millett was top bowler for Devonshire with four wickets.
Devonshire succumbed in just 25 overs as Millett top scored with 28. Austin, Archer and Moore each snatched two wickets apiece for Police.
Willow Cuts 143 Southampton 147-7 Southampton are through to the last eight following their seven wicket win over Willow Cuts at Somerset.
Cuts continue to struggle with their batting with only two batsmen reaching double figures. Richard Basden hit 54, including seven fours, while captain Dexter Basden scored 34 with five boundaries. Garry Williams claimed three for 30 and Dwayne (Pickles) Steede three for 22 to lead the Rangers bowling.
Rangers completed victory in 34.3 overs with opener Kwame Tucker scoring 56 from 10 fours and a six and Janeiro Tucker 21. Steven Brown took three for 43, Rodney Fubler two for 25 and Kevin Fubler two for 27.
Cleveland 104 St. George's 108-4 In form Clay Smith was not required to bat as the top order did the job against Cleveland at Wellington Oval.
Even a weakened bowling attack was too strong for Cleveland who could only manage 104 in 31 overs with Curtis Jackson scoring 35, Allan Douglas 20 and Aaron Adams 17. Lionel Cann claimed three wickets and Eugene Foggo and Mark Ray two each, while Cann also hit 22 in the run chase.
