Britons pull off tennis upset

introduced themselves in a very big way yesterday during the third round of the Coral Beach Club Invitational.

Hales, the top seed in the women's open division, and a quality player within her club team in Cheltnam, teamed up with fellow Briton Finnegan, a recent addition to the local tennis fraternity, to upset top seeds Kathy Stuhler and Kelly Holland 7-6, 7-6 in the women's doubles open.

But Hales' attempt at two major upsets on the same afternoon ended when the second-seeded mixed doubles pair of Gill Butterfield and Mike Curry rallied from a set down to advance into the semi-finals with a 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-1 victory over Hales and Jack Masri.

Earlier, all eyes were on centre court, where Mark Cordeiro, though fighting off four match points before winning the second set, could not overcome the consistent play of fourth-seed Alec Anderson, succumbing 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 in the men's open.

"It could have gone either way,'' said Anderson. He then tipped his hat to his younger opponent and stated "he's a talented player, but he started to get cramps and I was able to take advantage of that.'' James Collieson defeated Byron Ballard 6-4, 6-2 in another open men's match.

Play continues today with some 30 matches at Coral Beach and nine at Newstead in the consolation bracket.
