Bryan's a role model for powerboat racers
competition for model powerboats.
The 35-year-old was understandably proud this week after returning from the 14th annual Orlando Winter Nationals with three trophies, becoming the first local to capture silverware at an international event for remote control boats.
Now that he has pulled off this personal achievement, Roach is hopeful that it will pave the way for the start of competitive remote control model powerboat racing in Bermuda.
"I am very optimistic of getting something competitive organised here by the summer. There has always been interest, but no real attempt has ever been made to get something serious underway,'' said Roach.
The Bermudian has been attending the event in Florida for five years, the first time as a spectator only.
Now, after just four years in the competition, Roach is aiming higher. The first participant to win three trophies, Roach now intends to compete in two more big-time competitions in the United States within the next six months. He has recently found a sponsor to help with his expenses.
At the Winter Nationals, Roach finished second out of 14 in the F-Mono competition, third of 42 in the F-Hydro and seventh of 42 in the 60-Hydro competition.
He is hoping his involvement and success abroad will make Bermudians more than just curious bystanders in the future, many passing the main gate at the Naval Air Station as they watch the boats roar around the popular racing area to the north.
Roach's interest in the sport is so rabid that he has established his own business called Go Fast Marine which he operates from his home in Hamilton.
"It's a great family interest with my wife Selina and nine-year-old son Bryan involved as well,'' he said.
"I have good contacts in Knoxville, Tennessee, in Terry and Becky Moore, who own and run Boat South in their state. They actually maintain my boats and assist me with material and other related matters,'' said Roach.
In May he will enter a race in North Carolina before returning to the Internationals in Orlando from July 21 to August 6, a major event which will feature three series of racing.
