Burgess leads Bay with unbeaten ton

Social Club 63 Bailey's Bay feasted on Social Club's mediocre bowling attack with Irving Burgess cracking an unbeaten century in their 200-run victory at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday.

The result was all too predictable in this one-sided match-up between the home team, who entered the day in eighth place, and their opponents who were at the bottom without a single win in four matches.

After Burgess' flourishing 100 not out, Bay rounded the day off with some good bowling by their opening duo Clarkie Trott and Corey Hill.

Trott was main destroyer, finishing with four wickets for 21 in 13.4 overs, including six maidens. Hill assisted by taking three for 15 off 12 overs with four maidens.

With that pair in fine form, Social Club never looked capable of reaching the winning target of 264, despite a staunch batting display by opener and skipper Webster Mills who stayed throughout his team's innings with a patient 36 not out.

Nobody else reached double figures.

But the day belonged to Burgess who only rejoined the team this season after spending some time with Hamilton Parish.

For the slightly built batsman it was his highest total of the young season, coming during a stay of 184 minutes at the crease. He stroked seven fours and two sixes.

Burgess, batting at number four, helped in Bay's largest stand by joining Corey Hill (31 not out) in a sixth-wicket partnership that added 66 runs. The two took the total from 125 for five to 191 when Bay declared just after Burgess reached the three-figure total.

Others among the runs were Clarkie Trott with 37, opener Cal Dill (28) and Irving Romaine (20).

Cecil Pitcher took three for 98 and Michael Smith had two for 36. Warwick 247 Somerset CC 62-8 Veteran El James blasted 118 but a late declaration ruined any chances Warwick had of getting a victory at Somerset.

Thanks to James, Warwick reached their highest total of the season but their insistence on batting until 5.25 proved to be costly.

The limited time remaining allowed the home team's batsmen to hang on for a draw.

James, who was dropped twice before he reached 50, finished with four fours and four sixes while batting for 172 minutes. Also among the runs for Warwick were Johnny Nusum and Allen Wilkinson with 22 apiece.

Wayne Ball took two for eight, Charles Swan two for 16 and Chris Caisey two for 40.

Sent in to reply at 5.34p.m., Somerset persevered after a dreadful start when they lost their first wicket at three and then found themselves struggling at 49 for seven. But Sidney Simmons (14 not out) helped them to weather the storm and earn a hard-fought draw.

Daniel Caines had three for 13, El James two for seven and Wilkinson two for 18.

Nationals 203-9 Willow Cuts 83-0 Nationals and Willow Cuts played to a tame draw at Nationals in a game that saw the home team sent in by the visitors.

Dennis Trott helped Nationals to a respectable total with 67 while Brendon Woolridge added 41, the pair putting on 84 for the third wicket. Graham Strange hit 31 and skipper Neil Speight 14.

Rodney Fubler was top bowler with five for 40 while Kevin Fubler had two for 30.

Willow Cuts faced 22 overs in reply with skipper Dexter Basden undefeated on 24 and Jermaine Warner not out on 53.

The Premier match between St.George's and Cleveland also ended in a draw with Cleveland scoring 221 and the home team replying with 168-5.

No further details on that match or the game between Southampton Rangers and Devonshire Rec. were available at press time.
