Courageous Jennings shakes off shoulder injury to lead the West
It will take more than a shoulder injury to keep Kentoine Jennings out of the All-Stars line-up tomorrow at Somerset.
And as captain of the West, Jennings, who also shrugged off a knee injury two years ago to play, is all the more determined to lead the West team, after the honour was bestowed upon him when he collected the most votes (233) in the fans' ballots.
Jennings received the injury in the closing minutes of Bermuda's second game with the Denmark under-23s on Tuesday night and was carried off. But indications are the injury is not serious enough to keep the top defender on the sidelines.
"At last check he told me he was still playing,'' said event organiser Craig Tyrrell yesterday.
Jennings' coach, John Rebello, who is also his club coach at Vasco, confirmed that Jennings was hoping to play.
"If it is realy sore, I'll probably just give him a show, 15, 20 minutes and see how it goes from there, '' said Rebello of the defending champions, West.
"He says it feels alright, I'm just glad it's nothing too serious.'' Rebello considers it an honour to be a part of the All-Stars, which, in his case, is possible through the efforts of his players who took the team to the top of the standings.
"It's an honour to my players, they got me there,'' said the coach who has Herbie Bascome and Ronue Cann as his assistants.
"For their hard work all of them got selected. It's fun, to just go out there and show their talent. I'm not going to put any constraints on them, just allow them to do what they do best.'' Three players are ruled out because of injuries, Devonshire Colts pair Jahmah Samuels and Makonnen Hollis of the East team and Dennis Robinson of the West.
Jermaine Belboda and Meshach Wade are confirmed replacements while Marlon Outerbridge is likely to be the other addition to the East team.
North Village youngster Jameiko Jennings became a fourth casualty late yesterday, ruled out for three weeks with a knee injury. His place will be taken by Otis Minors of Boulevard.
The two teams are evenly matched with the East, captained by Nakia Smith of Wolves, also containing Shannon Burgess, Kofi Dill, Leroy Stevens, Keishon Smith, Dwight Warren, Tokia Russell, Neil Robinson, Ellington Weldon and goalkeepers Hewvonnie Brown and Nyon Steede.
The West have Darron Simons, Dwight Basden, Rohan Simons, Kenny Mills, Otis Steede, Devarr Boyles, Dano Outerbridge, Karl Roberts and goalkeepers Timmy Figureido and Jason Smith.
Seven players have already been confirmed for the sprint challenge to determine who is the fastest man in local football. They are Galvin Butterfield of Devonshire Cougars, Torianno Trott of Wolves, Vernon Phillips of Boulevard, Eddie Dowling of PHC, Shannon Bell of Hamilton Parish, Darnell Pinkney of Somerset Eagles and Prospect's Daniel Reece. Three other possibilities are Dion Woolridge of Somerset Trojans, Southampton's Rohan Simons and Kevin Jennings of North Village, who is still undecided.
The action will begin at noon with the women's All-Star match (35-minutes per half), followed at 1.30 by the under-21s.
