Cricketers heading home after unbeaten tour
Lloyd's CC 65-1 Bermuda's cricketers protected their unbeaten record during their five-match tour of England as, for the second straight match, rain interrupted their match after they had posted a big total.
The tour ended yesterday in London against Lloyd's Cricket Club. Winning the toss and deciding to bat first, Bermuda managed to complete their innings despite stoppages for rain. They faced their full quota of overs with opener Dexter Smith and captain Albert Steede stroking 85 and 80 respectively to lead them to a respectable total.
After adding 40 for the first wicket with Clay Smith (29) in nine overs, Dexter Smith was joined by Steede and in the next 33 overs they added 153 for the second wicket before Smith fell 15 short of a century. He struck nine fours and three sixes.
And despite losing Steede 20 runs later -- his knock including seven fours and a six -- Bermuda still managed to score 64 in the last eight overs. Charlie Marshall chipped in with 24 before being trapped lbw while Dean Minors was unbeaten on 22.
Barbadian H.Bryan, whom the Bermuda players remember playing against during a tournament in Barbados in April, led the Lloyd's bowling with two for 50 from his 10 overs of pace.
Lloyd's, who contained five professionals -- all from the Surrey League -- had scored at a rate of three runs an over before rain halted play for the final time at the end of the 20th over of their innings.
Perinchief, opening the bowling in the absence of Roger Blades who was feeling unwell, took the only wicket to finish with one for 18 from six overs.
"It was a successful tour and the younger guys adopted pretty well,'' said manager Vance Gilbert. "The wickets were good for our batsmen but today it was rainy and cold so we were in and out of the rain. The game started at 11.20 and finished after 7 p.m.'' The team returns home this evening. The BCBC will host the Leeward Islands in September before Bermuda makes their debut in the Shell/Sandals competition in October.
