Cyclist Hubbard claims second US triumph
Philadelphia-based team Tri-State Velo when he won the 40-mile Clearview Classic on Sunday in New Jersey.
Hubbard actually crossed the finish line second, nipped in a sprint finish by an unknown English rider, however, the Bermudian was awarded first place when the race committee disqualified the Englishman for riding on the wrong side of the road.
The latter had been warned at least three times during the race with regard to his maintaining the correct line, all of which went unheeded.
Racing in torrential rain 100 starters set out on the trek shortened from the original 65 mile distance.
With five miles to go Hubbard and the Englishman embarked on a successful breakaway that resulted in a sprint finish.
Hubbard was said to be delighted regarding the outcome and was now gearing toward the Tour de Tuna, a three-day stage race starting tomorrow in Pennsylvania.
It was also revealed that Hubbard will travel to Colorado on September 8 in order to be able to train in high altitude in preparation for the October World Amateur Championships in Colombia. Currently the United States team are based in the same area.
